My 04 corolla CE automatic makes a noise similar to a supercharger whine when I am accelerating. Not as loud as a supercharger, but noticeable when I don't have the radio on. It seems to be related to throttle, my transmission fluid is going to be changed tomorrow, but the car doesn't grind or slip. Seems to be present in all gears, though more noticeable in lower ones.
Is this just corolla being a corolla, or is it something more?

Here is an example of the progressive type of whine, though this video is of a super charger. The noise is not as high pitched as a supercharger.

There was a TSB for a "whistle or hoot" noise. The TSB called for replacing the transmission cooler lines with a redesigned part. Judging by your cars rust. I would leave it be.

You can always ask the dealer if this repair applies/was performed.

Short of that it could be a bad noise filter, differential, bad ground, etc. But more than likely its your cooler lines.

It seems to be present only when accelerating. Coasting it is not present and it seems to lessen as speed increases. It is also pretty faint, with music on you couldnt hear it. Pitch changes depending on the amoun of acceleration. I can post a video clip later.

TSB-122-11 released Sept 1 2005
TC012-05 WHISTLE/HOOT NOISE FROM AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE

Some 2003 – 2006 model year Corolla vehicles equipped with the 1ZZ–FE engine and an automatic transaxle (ATM) may exhibit a “whistle” or “hoot” noise under light acceleration at 35 – 40 mph (56 – 64 km/h) with the ATM at normal operating temperature. ATM cooler lines have been modified to reduce this condition on customer complaint vehicles.

You may consider replacing the transmission's cooler lines when replacing your ATF.

Yeah, it's fine like that, just a bit noisy under certain conditions.

Replacement aftermarket hose is available simply as a 11/32" ID X 4-1/2 ft long hose that is cut in 4 lengths to fit.... Such hose would be available from an auto parts distributor in any desired length, as required.

I don't know if the TSB refers to replacing the entire cooler lines including the rigid metal pipe sections.

Yes the TSB calls for Replacing the entire cooler line. Judging from the engine bay shot you posted I would leave it alone based on the amount of rust you have. You may try to replace them and cause more damage than good.

It is an annoyance only. Does not effect operation.
