I know that the 83 22rs are slightly different than the 85s, but is there any reason they won't just bolt in? If not, what would need to be changed?

Will bolt right in just did the opposite dropped in a 22RE from an 85 into my 83. trans and driveshaft are the same will bolt in too

Just remember though an 85 22RE is different then a 83. So you might have to change the ECU. Also where at in Kansas you at GT93ford? I am in Overland Park, KS which is a suberb of Kansas City.
