I was wondering about that as well. Is it even possible for them to get to the pain? I don't think the drain(s) or return for that head are very big, not like the big one on the front of some of the old engines like the 4A/7A.

if a shim got broken or somehow came loose, i could see it dropping thru some of the drain slots, but i doubt it'd make it to the pan. probably get stuck in the head or block somewhere, unless it shattered first. which case you wouldn't be able to recognize it as a shim - it'd just be a chunk of metal. and shims are hard. by design.
