Temperature gauge sending unit

I have a 1984 4runner carburated 22r and the temperature guage doesn't seem to be working. It was working a week ago and now nothing. Can someone tell me where the sending unit to this is located? I thought it was the one located on the thermostat housing. Is this correct? If not,then where is it and what is the one on the thermostat housing for? Thanks for any help.
