I have a tercel 92 and when I shift to reverse the motor cuts out on me. I've disconnected the shift cable and shited the tranny manually and the problem continues. I disconnected the cable to see if it had to do with a switch in the console area, but it's not. Please help me with this.

air intake

your air intake has a crack in it that is only opening when the the motor tilts the opposite way when going in reverse.the rubber between air flow meter and throttle body.you can temp fix with duct tape.also if this is problem you might also check your motor and tranny mounts.ihave seen this on many differnt auto.if this isnt problem maybe lose wire connection when motor tilts

Southside, you might be right about a leak in the intake, but I'll tell you something else. I've noticed that this problem occurs when the engine starts to get warm from a cold start ,anyway I'm going with your advise and check the intake. Thanks very much.
