tercel turbo motor swap

you guys have completely forgotten to mention that there is one more motor that bolts directly into the EL chassis.. the 3ete.. although its EXTREMELY difficult to find, it is a high preformance turbo motor that will bolt directly into the tercel... its simply a turbo 3ee with output similar to that of the 4efte...

similar, but not so simliar
The 4efte has been pretty reliable,as far as daily driving/drag racing, just be very carefull of overcooking the intercooler, the 3ete and 4efte both needed front mounts........
about the over cook.
i happen to like the TMIC
what if the hood scoop could draw in mroe air?
that would improve right?

Not sure about 3E-TE being similar output to a 4E-FTE;

3E-TE SOHC 3 86- 1456* [email protected] [email protected] 2.87 3.43 8.0:1

as opposed to

EP82 version

3E-TE is limited in how much it can be upgraded as opposed to the 4E-FTE, which is the favored swap.

I believe the 4e has a TMIC, not sure about the 3ete, but not worth the time/money/trouble anyway, IMO

4E has a top mount. Front is PREFERRABLE, but it can be run just fine on the top mount application.

I wanted to get a '97 Tercel, what can I swap in easily?
JDM 5E-FE, 5E-FHE, but when it comes to the 4E-FTE, its still a direct drop in, but there are a few differences in the distributor, fuel lines and wiring harness set-ups that have to be dealt with..minor things but notable things that would make the cost of the swap a little bit more if done by a professional.

Pretty much, refer to the top for the basics. Unless you got some nice change laying around, you can consider the a series swaps like 4a-ge or 4agze etc.
i kinda like the 127 ft lbs of torque at 1600 rpms sooner from the 3ete.
I like Shark, but it has alot of mercury:(

Stick with the 4EFTE people if you want immediate boost with building potential. The 3ETE although rare, it isnt rare because its hot....its rare because its not!

sigh. the 3ete is rare because it was only made for about 2 years and mostly to the australian market. All 4000-6000 units.

Though it may not have the power potential of say the 4efte, it is still a turbo engine, with a bigger turbo, forged internals, and can easily run past the 200hp mark as well.

The best thing is...when parts start breaking under normal wear and tear, you can go out to any autozone or pepboys and buy most of the major parts...water pumps, timing belts, idle tensioners, gaskets, bearing, you name it, without having to special order.
Hmph....Well I dunno how its done out in Cali, but on the East Coast the only thing a 3E anything be it turbo, carb or efi is good for is to prop up the garage to the shop! Maybe sell it to a elementary school for a beginners engine project or something :lol: . Theres actually 3 of those motors sitting 5 miles away from me in a warehouse (for anyone who is having a hard time finding one :rolleyes: ). The money necessary to see a reliable 3E-TE (key word) boost over 200hp would be better spent on the 4E or 5E. People on the East Coast pop those motors like a virgin on prom night...its inevitable :lol: ! But in all seriousness, if thats your cup of tea, go ahead with it...hell you need help buying parts for it, I'll be more than glad to assist you with the best prices out there and or someone who can definitely do so. FYI JDM 5EFHE and 4EFTE parts can be sought out thru their american counterparts with little to no difference in item numbers :cool: .

Here are some specs to figure on each;

3E-TE SOHC 3 86- 1456* [email protected] [email protected] 2.87 3.43 8.0:1

now....

4E-FTE DOHC 4/25 98 1331 [email protected] [email protected] 74 77.4 8.2:1

do the math people. The better platform is where you wanna start. Not knocking the hussle, but if you have the funds to buy a Porsche, why settle for a Mustang?

PS. There are 4E's over this way pushing well over 250hp to the wheels.....stock internals.

dotmrep, did you say there are some 3e-e's sitting in a warehouse near you? I need a replacement engine til i get the money for a 4efte. How much will it cost me including shipping to Terre Haute, IN?
Also if anyone else near IN or OH has a 3e-e they want to get rid of cheap, i need one. Im not too concerned about miles, but as long as it runs good and doesnt leak anything. I drive about 500 miles eveyother weekend and a lot of daily driving.
I have a 96 4dr with 120000 miles what do you suggest to get more power and make faster
Matrix:..yes there are some low mileaga 3e-es here so we can see whats up, I'd need your shipping address to know the exacts.

jvic04: You can either swap out entirely or do the basic mods...cold air intake, underdrive pulley, 2.25/2.50 exhaust w/ headers and high flow cat to a performance muffler. Unfortuantely you add up the cost of all of that and you are about a 1/3 of the way or more to a 4E-FTE Turbo Swap or 1/2 way to a 5E-FHE Swap..so you gotta weigh options vs budget and what you want out of your car.
