I just found out we have a 21 gal tank.

Nice that I've never been as close to empty as I thought. I've had the needle bottomed out a few times for miles before getting to a gas station.

20.4 and 751 miles, just had to break 750.

Va Beach to Boston: 582.8 miles / 19.949 gallons = 29.2 mpg

I've put alittle over 20 gallons in my truck once. I try to keep it on the top half of the tank most of the time though.

Is it a good idea to run the fuel level down so low? I thought the fuel pump was submerged in the tank to keep it from overheating or something along those lines.

Yep, you are correct, that is why I try to run on the top half of my tank.

Nope, the pump is cooled and lubricated by the fuel that flows through it, not the fuel it is submerged in. You have to run the tank dry before it stops getting cooled.

p.s. for me it is right at 17.5 if I gas up as son as the gas light comes on.

I was caught in the middle of nowhere once and by the time I found a station and filled up she drank 20.2 gal. (think that pump had issues though) Like most though I rarely let it get below 1/2 tank.

I'm impressed. That's 37 mpg. Was it all downhill?

Also, the fuel pump is in a plastic bucket in the fuel tank and the fuel return dumps into the bucket, so it is submerged as long as there's fuel in the tank. The bottom of the bucket has a one-way check valve, so fuel can go in, but not out.

on my 09 dcsb 6 speed i only get 263 miles out of a full tank....

How many gallons is the fill up? which size tires?

263 miles on just under 21 gallons of fuel is 12.52 mpg.... i have 285 75 16 with a 3" lift, CAI, throttle body spacer and flowmaster dual side exit....
