This ever happen to you? (Steering Wobble at high speed)

I've got a 2006 V6 Hybrid. I've noticed a knocking/bumping noise that sounds like it comes from the Left Rear tire at speeds between 40 - 60 MPH. In addition to the knocking noise, there's some occasional rear-end fishtailing, as if the car is being hit with a strong stiff wind. Needless to say, it makes for some exciting trips down the highway!

Here's the rub:
The first place I took it to is a place that specializes in tires. I had them do an alignment thinking that the issue was alignment (as I had had all four tires replaced with 60K tires about 6 months before that).

They told me I needed Front and Rear struts as well as the Front Control arms replaced. Strangely enough, they didn't recommend tire replacement.

Wanting to get a second opinion (especially after I looked up the parts online and saw how much of a markup they were putting on them), I took it to the Dealership thinking "Well, they'll certainly tell me the correct solution - they'll charge and arm and a leg for it, but I'll at least know if the first place was correct". They told me I needed to replace *all four* tires before they could troubleshoot further(!):wtf::headbang:

I took it to a third place, where I used to get service all the time and trusted the mechanics. They told me the issue was the Steering Knuckles, (a part I had to Google to determine they weren't having some fun at my underinformed expense).

Finally, I took it to a FOURTH place and they told me the issue was the Sway Arm and Trailing Arm bushings.

I now know more than I ever cared to know about tire assembly and suspension and I'm pretty sure that the fourth place has it pegged (the bushings being worn out allow the tire to move sideways, causing the wobble). This being said, have any of you had issues with different mechanics struggling to diagnose your problem?

Moving this to the gen 1 non-hybrid forum as it pertains to non-hybrid specific parts.

As for your issues, I have no idea, sorry.
Newer tires, fishy rear end, knocking sound from rear end and speed related vibration/bumping noise...

My first check would be for a a blown strut. Have someone drive in the other lane and observer rear wheels between 40 and 60 mph when you notice the vibration/bouncing. Check strut for oil on the polished chrome shaft and the strut body.

Second check would be the rubber bushing on the rear lower control arm

Third check; trailing arm bushings or upper strut mount.

Have to check mine too based on the above...thanks.

Per the first place's recommendation, got all four struts replaced and the Front Control arms replaced as well. Sway is actually MORE pronounced than before! - I'm feeling it at lower speeds.

I'm beginning to think the bushings are where its at.
If the sway is in the back, why are you letting someone replace parts in the FRONT? Were the front control arms really shot?

Replacing parts until a problem goes away is a $$ approach.... if the sway is that pronounced, it's a little hard to fathom that a decent mechanic can't identify the cause.
Was just told by another mechanic that the issue is the Spindle Bushings and I'd need to have them replaced on both sides. His quote for the part itself was $435 (each!) before adding in labor and taxes.

No idea what a spindle bushing is. Spindle bearing? control arm bushing?
I'm assuming that's the bushing/bearing (likely brass bushing) for the splined shafts of either the transaxle output or front hub assembly :dunno:
