What’s Wrong With This Picture: Toyota Owners And Their Floormats Edition By Edward Niedermeyer on July 23, 2010

An anonymous Toyota Tech sent us these recent images of a 2008 Prius and its highly questionable pedal-floormat interface. Did nobody tell this guy that Toyota has had some problems with floormat pedal interference, and that there had been a recall? Did he somehow miss the months-long media frenzy? This is yet more proof that there is literally no way to completely prevent unintended acceleration, even if the problem has been identified and a recall has been issued. Remember folks, when it comes to cars only you can keep you safe.

One out of every four recalled cars never gets fixed.

Vehicle recalls may have made big headlines recently, but it's not just Toyota. There are hundreds of other recalls affecting millions of vehicles every year. The problem is, not everyone listens when the warnings go out.
An estimated 37 million vehicles recalled for safety problems never get fixed.

The government estimates that *25 percent of owners of recalled vehicles never get those problems fixed*, meaning an estimated 37 million vehicles the government wants repaired for safety reasons never get the fix.

Despite the fact that the critical repairs that are necessary to make a recalled item safe again cost the owners nothing, and despite the best efforts of both the manufacturers and the media to make sure that as many owners as possible get word of the recalls, one very troubling fact remains: For a typical vehicle recall today, fully 28% of the vehicle owners never take advantage of the vital repair programs, despite the fact that all the repairs are done for free.

It looks like the carpet mat was placed in upside-down, a trick that dealers and rental car agencies (among others) resort to in order to keep the carpets clean without having to buy after-market rubber mats. Perhaps the owner of this Prius did hear about the all-weather mat recall: he took them out as advised and in order to keep the carpets clean, he merely turned the carpet mats over.

They obviously didn't have them clipped in correctly. No recall even needed if that were the case.
