Timing belt replacement

1179 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  4agetercel
Hi;

Just wondering if there is a how-to with pics on here for replacing the TB on a 1989 Tercel - mine just snapped. other than that, and a few leaks :rolleyes:, the car is fine, so I wouldn't mind trying this job myself if I had some guidance.

I looked at the DIY thread, and did not see a post there relating to this. If anyone knows if such a 'how-to' exists, can you please point me to it? thanks.

sure, put the car on stands, take off the crank harmonic and all the belts, take the plastic covers off and thats your DIY, once you get that stuff off its really straight forward, if you need help setting the timing let us know
Well, I already knew that the general procedure for replacing ANYTHING is to remove the old stuff and put the new stuff on....

Remember, the whole reason I'm asking is because I DON'T KNOW.

So I'm assuming your answer is: "No, I do not know of a how-to page w/ pics for this job". - that's what i was asking for............

Has anyone documented this job, and is it available on the web?
It probably has be, there happens to be this wonderful little function called the search button. It doesn't bite and I suggest using it. You may also want to head on over to Tercelonline and search over there, chances are you should be able to gather enough information to do it on your own. If you do the leg work the info is out there.

Its not a topic that needs a lot of discussion. Very basic. Follow the book, but don’t pull the motor mount that the book prescribes unless you are replacing the accessorily belts as well.

The only issue that keeps popping up is how to remove the balancer/pulley w/o the crank turning.

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=294669 Just a quick search using the “active topics” link at the top of the page.

If your inexperienced, I suggest you use an impact wrench and a six point socket as the make shift solutions can be dangerous. You can rent them for about $20.
If you have any specific issues while performing the maintenance, do post here again and we will gladly address it.

Edit; FYI: A pic tutorial wouldnt be anymore comprehensive than the book. If your lacking a manual go here http://www.autozone.com/autozone/homePage.jsp?cmpid=Google and sign in.

Well if you DONT KNOW, how are you GOING TO KNOW, if you dont TRY TO DO IT YOURSELF,

sitting on the computer and asking us for do it yourselfs isnt gunna change your belt, if youve ever changed a regular drive belt the timing belt isnt too different other than setting the timing marks, so get out there and do it,

or if youre really all hell bent on a DIY, go buy a 20 dollar Haynes instruction manual at a local parts store
