Hi. I'm not new to toyotas, but new to the Toyota pickup. I have aquired a 1989 pickup with a 1993 engine. (I'll let that sink in) truck runs great. But being a mechanic I always go other my new toys before I do any majob driving. OK, enough chit chat. When checking the timing, I cannot get the mark on the pulley to line up with the pointer. It's always about 1/4 inch to the left of the pointer and I run out of adjustment. I did everything by the book and I'm stuck. I timed it by ear and it runs fine. But I'm still concerned. Am I missing something?

Are you jumping the diagnostic connector when checking the timing and is the idle speed set correctly?

The te1 and e1 connector right? Yes. When I jump the two, should I hear a change in idle, because I don't. Another thing, the distributor has a vacuum advance. Does it suppose too? Looked at pics of the engine online and they don't have a vacuum advance.

The EFI 22re should not have a vacuum advance, the carbureted 22r will though. And yes, the engine should idle down a little when TE1 and E1 are jumped.

Does the check engine light flash with they are jumped? if not, does it come on for a few seconds with the rest of the dash lights when the truck is started?

Disconnect the vacuum lines and plug them like you would when timing a 22R.

Someone screwed that thing up big time! At this point, sounds like it would be easier to just swap to a carburetor and do away with all the EFI since the PO seems to have done most of that already.

Don't want to go to carburetor. Runs fine. That's the mystery. Drove it home, runs great. Just me doing my pre driving inspection and finding strange issues. Lol. I'm just surprised it's running with nour tps. The connection is there, but sensor is not. I ordered a sensor and gonna start from there.

You need to jump data link connector te-e1 to get base timing before making any adjustments. The check engine light should be flashing. I hope that helps. If not check your throttle position sensor if it's within specs.
