A 1/2 quart too much is not a big problem . But the question is why are you not putting in the amount of oil that shows full on the dip stick .

Thanks for your response---I usually do put the required 4.5 qts. I change the oil myself every 3K miles. That may be overkill, but then I've never heard of an engine "complain" about having cleaner oil.

no. i always put 5 in my 02. plus the 08 loves to burn oil so the extra half is ok. just change the oil every 3000 to 5000 miles do not go over 5000
I bought the car new and 1st oil/filter change was @ 500 miles, again @ 1500 miles, again @ 3000 miles and every 3K miles since using Mobil 1 oil and Mobil 1 filter.

i buy the 5 qt jug and i use the whole thing so I'm not wasting oil.
That's the very definition of "wasting oil." You're wasting 0.5 qt that would be perfectly useable at your next oil change. You're creating a "dead asset" unnecessarily.

Put in what's called for, save the rest for the next change. Lather, rinse, repeat.

It would likely be a much better idea to fill with 4.5 quarts, per the specifications... run the engine for a minute or two- then check the dipstick and add more if necessary.

Any car that age (really any car) should have the oil level checked regularly between oil changes. I generally check my Highlander's oil level each time I refill it with gas. I have to wait five minutes to fill the tank anyway.

As other's have said, no issue at all, many many of us add the extra as it is easier. Saying that, if you are changing every 3k I would not add the extra as you wind up tossing a lot of clean oil away at that rate. You don't say how many miles you put on in a year, but if I changed my oil every 3k and added the extra I would be essentially throwing away 3.5 quarts of oil a year. Wouldn't break me by any means but I'd rather put that money somewhere else.

Based on the car being 15 yo, that's an average of 3400 miles/year. When i bought the Camry new, I had an old '88 Honda Accord hatchback that I decided to keep to help the Camry stay low mileage. That plan worked. But I had to get rid of the Honda about a month ago cuz it was getting too repair expensive, plus parts and tires (13") were sometimes hard to find.

Hopefully I will be able to say the same.
And if you can currently say the same, add 4.5 qt at the change and save the last half quart for the next change. Doing that gets you a "free" (not really, but extra) full change every 9th change, effectively.
