At Long Last, the Stig Lifts His Visor

Car culture’s Deep Throat has come forward. Some would call such a statement wildly hyperbolic. Others would say it is not hyperbolic enough. All we know is the writers at “Top Gear” need some new material — and soon.

The revelation on Wednesday of the true identity of the Stig, an enigmatic racer whose opaque helmet visor had never lifted to reveal a face, brings an end to seven years of rampant online speculation, and pre-empts a protracted legal squabble between media heavyweights.

The Stig is a fixture of BBC’s “Top Gear,” the world’s most popular automotive television program. As HarperCollins U.K. prepared to release an autobiography of a decorated professional racer named Ben Collins, in which he says he is the Stig, the BBC brought an injunction to block the book’s release, which was denied on Wednesday, leading the publisher to frame the move in a statement as a “victory for freedom of speech.”

Before putting on the Stig’s white helmet and jumpsuit in 2003, Mr. Collins raced competitively in the Formula Three division in his native England, as well as at Daytona and Le Mans, winning his class on multiple occasions. His former team manager, Glenn Waters, said in a BBC interview that Mr. Collins “may well be the fastest driver I’ve ever run.”

Mr. Collins is also employed for stunt work on Hollywood blockbusters. He stood in for Daniel Craig’s James Bond character in “Quantum of Solace” in 2008 during that film’s harrowing chase sequences.

The revelation follows an elaborate 2009 hoax devised by “Top Gear” producers, whereby the seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher appeared on the program as the Stig. The show’s de facto host, Jeremy Clarkson, intoned later in the program that Mr. Schumacher was not the actual Stig.

“The Man in the White Suit: The Stig, Le Mans, The Fast Lane and Me” receives its British release on April 28.

That is sad. Compared to the older black Stig, "whiter brighter" stig was far more capable of extracting the maximum out of the car running incredibly fast lap times for each car. Definitely an awesome track racer.

Also, thanks to The Stig, LFA trumped the 458 Italia, SLS AMG, GT3 RS and 570-4 Superleggera in the "Greatest 5 supercars of 2010 showdown". The magazine was full of praises for the LFA. They declared the year 2010 "best year for supercars they ever have had".

LFA was Stig's most favorite "track weapon" and consequently picked as winner. He talks about it in great detail in the September edition about everything power, handling, braking, grip, chassis etc. Scans of the article will follow soon.
