Having worked in the Petrol industry for years previously, no I don't bother with only getting top tier...
You will notice much more of a difference if you can find ethanol free gas than top tier.
Sadly here in CA there is no more pure fuel, it all has ethanol in it... :(

I have consistently monitored mpg in all my cars since the late 1960s. I use Shell (now 10% ethanol) almost exclusively. I will use AMOCO, ARCO, BP, CITGO, Exxon, Mobil, Texeco or Valero when I travel. I never use Gulf - I've tried it several times over the years in several of my cars and it consistently returned about 5% lower mpg.

In order for me to buy Top-Tier gas I'd have to drive 20 miles out of my way. So I rarely ever buy it. Is it going to help much? I don't know. I've owned 4 vehicles with well over 300k miles on them. Wifes 07 Lexus also recommends Top-Tier (and again never done). Car now has over 180k miles and still runs great.

Know what ya mean. FWIW...only 113K mi on my old 98 Buick V6 (when sold) using alot of unbranded 87 oct. & noticed no real diff. VS using branded fuel. In 2014 I switched over to Costco (top tier)..87 oct. Main reason...close by..lower price per gal..rebate using citi visa. But, lots of stations are "top tier".

What I mainly noticed sometime ago when emission additive "mtbe" was replaced here with "10% ethanol" mpg on my buick dropped 1 mpg. I assume same happens to my HL mpg?

Of COURSE I do!

But tha's because we have Kwik Trip stations all around where I live, and they are convenient, have reasonably-priced gas, and they have CHEAP BANANAS (and milk and butter and other stuff that I'm likely to need when I'm already stopping for gas).

Otherwise, I don't worry about it.
