I have found a one inch scratch on my camry and I'd like to know if a DIY job would be possible. I've never painted any parts of a car before, so I hope someone would assist me by telling me what kind of materials I need and the steps that may be involve. The scratch is on the side molding, so I figured maybe a touchup would be cheaper than ordering a new side mold.
Touchup paint will do the job by filling the scratch but it will always be noticeable. If you want it to go away the entire area will need to be sanded and repainted. That might involve just the molding if the damage is limited to that area.
I remember seeing a diy using some paint and a tooth pick to fill in the scratch if its really deep. and some type of wet sanding and polishing was required.
It all depends on the how deep the scratch is, you could probably use a polish if its not to deep.
Get something on it before any rust appears. It will probably show after any repair short of a total repaint of that section. It's unfortunate but thats the life of an auto in the real world.
Park way out and get some extra exercise.
