I just got my '08 TRD Sport Double Cab LB 4x4! It came with the tow package and said that this included a 7 to 4 pin adapter. I can't seem to find this. Is it something that is already pre-installed? Or do they hide it somewhere in the truck?
Also, any advice on which ball mount hitch I should get?

The adapter if you have it will be in the glove box.
The ball all depends on what you are towing certain ones are rated higher than other for weight even though they may be the same class(I,II,III,IV). You may want to wait though cause if you lift your truck you may need a greater drop than you get now, if not the trailer won't sit right.

On the sticker it says something about 7-pin converter. This means the box in the wiring that converts your seperate tail/brake/turn signal lights to work in the one lamp on each side on most trailers.
However, I've heard of quite a few folks that went back to the dealer and got them to throw in a 7-to-4 pin adapter. I don't know if this is actually included in the tow package or not, but it's worth a try!

Wow, I think I have some sort of wiring adaptor in my glove box, but I'm pretty sure its for trailer brakes. I did however pick up an adaptor at home depot for $6! It does come in handy.

A converter and adapter are two different things. Since the Tacoma uses LED lights, you need to convert (step up) the power for trailers which typically do not have LED lights. On the other hand, the adapter takes the 7 pin connection and adapts it to a flat 4 pin connection. The "converter" is included in the tow package, the "adaptor" is not and can be bought at the dealership (or whereever) for $10 or so.

I thought the adapter was used because imports do not combine the brake and signal lights like most North American vehicles do. I could be wrong, but our trucks just use standard light bulbs don't they and not LED's?

The trucks never seem to have them even though it says they are included. Just tell you dealer you are missing yours and they should give you one. My dealer checked every truck on their lot and it wasn't in any one of them. They don't worry about it unless you ask. The parts dept will get one and it shouldn't cost you anything since it says its included on the sticker.

I didn't buy mine new so I don't know if it came with one to begin with or not, but I went to the wal-mart and picked up one for like $7. Unless you're the kind of person that gets hot and bothered about 'the principle of the thing,' it's not that big of a deal.

As far as hitches, I've got a 4" drop which is a good middle-of-the-road length. Almost every trailer uses a 2" ball.

Like many have said

From the Toyota Brochure:

V6 Towing Package [2] includes: Class-4 towing hitch, transmission oil cooler (automatic transmission models), supplemental engine oil cooler, heavy-duty battery, 130-amp alternator and 7-pin connector with converter

From etrailer:

Not the same thing.

I have the same truck and it doesn't come with the 7 pin round to 4 pin flat adapter I need for my boat trailer. When I picked up my truck I asked about it and the service manager sold me one for "half price" being I bought the truck there. $10.00 plus tax. Later at Walmart I saw the same thing for $9.99.

The Reese hitch ($20) with 3 1/4" drop and 2" ball works perfect for my boat. You can also get an extra 1 7/8" ball for cheap. My wood wagon and splitter use the smaller one.

I just picked up my taco with tow and did not receive the adaptor but rather a wire harness. Needless to say I have sent my dealer an email and will follow up with a phone call today when I wake up.
:thumbsdow
And yes, most dealers do not know about their products.

Toyota has somewhat confusing terminology in the listing of the tow pkg contents; what they are calling the "adapter" is the electronic converter box/diodes for the turn signals, the harness pigtail is for an owner installed brake controller hookup. Some have gotten the 7/4 adapter in the past when the dealer personnel read the word adapter" in the contents list, but it is not really included.

Why is everyone so bent up about these things? It would cost me more in gas money to go to my dealer and get the damn thing than I paid for it at the wal-mart.

And what is all this crap about converters? What else would a "7 to 4 pin" converter do besides convert the signal from the seven pin outlet on the trucks to the four pin plug on most trailers? There may be something that converts the brake/turning light signals to be used with a trailer (I don't know) but if there was such a thing it would not be called a "7 to 4 pin" converter, because there is no four pin plug involved!
