My question is I was told that I have a pre-wired towing wire harness some place near the back bumper. I have been looking for this thing for 2days now and I can not find it. Does anyone know were it may be, or should I just goto the dealer and have the salesman that told me this find it.

Towing Capabilities???

I have a small camping trailer, (about #3000 loaded and maybe #450 tongue weight.)

I have always towed this with a large suv, (currently a ford expedition 5.4L.) I have done this because at least in the past other tow vehicles (smaller engines,) were barely better in mpg, and worked much much harder. I also feel that having a larger more powerful tow vehicle is safer for many reasons. Just MHO.

But, as you might imagine the Ford gets horrendeous mileage. I try not to drive it much unless I'm towing, but it gets a fair amount of use anyway.

So I'm really interested in the HiHy. But I'm concerned about towing. The Expedition is rated at like #7k, and the Hilander at #3500 max.

Will the HiHy tow this size trailer competently? Anyone have experience with this?

Wow, so Nobody has towed anything with the Hybrid? For Real? :rolleyes:


Maybe this is just a really bad idea. I've had those before.

There's been plenty of towing. The car has plenty of power. I personally haven't towed but I've read some good threads on it (4,000lb trailer with brake assist installed). Check over on edmunds for the thread.

Highlander Hybrid towing

So I hope this question isn’t redundant, but does anyone have any experience towing with their Highlander Hybrid? I know they are rated for 3500lbs (with the proper tow package), but has anyone actually done this and if so, how well do they perform?

Secondly, according to Toyota, the “towing prep package” is required to two and includes the wiring, transmission cooler etc. The sales people at my local dealer can’t seem to determine if the hybrids come standard with this or not. Does anyone know?

Towing wiring harness

The connection for the towing wiring harness can be found under the left rear storage compartment. You must remove the box and you will find the connection here. The Toyota harness comes complete with a new gromet to allow the wires to pass outside the car.

Yes but you have to buy 3 things. Trailer hitch, tow harness, & some tow haness filter. Instructions are all inclueded in the harness filter on how to install everything. Over in reality it is a big pain in the azz, but it can tow, I am pull'n 2 Sea Doo RXP's with no probs.

Here are the parts that you need for towing with your HiHy (along with the Toyota part numbers):

PT228-69045 Toyota Highlander 2" Receiver Hitch (Class II - 3500 lbs)
08921-48861 Trailer wiring harness converter (hybrid specific)

On the Toyota website and in the Highlander brochure that I have the towing capacity of the Highlander Hybrid is listed at 3500lbs. The "Tow Prep Package" is included according to this document:

I believe that all hybrids come pre-wired for towing.:)

I tow with my Hybrid Highlander -- have two trailers, a 12 ft that tows 5,000 lbs.
and a 10 ft that tows 3,500 lbs.

It does much better with the ten foot trailer.

I've towed my kubota 6100 tractor and my Grizzly 600cc ATV and it does this well. :rolleyes:

:sosad: :confused: However.... It's problematic on hills -- steep grade hills... especially if they are wet or have a bit of snow.... last winter there was 1/2" of snow and the Highlander crapped out on me and wouldn't go the last 100 ft of the hill. All wheel drive was USELESS and it took 1.25 hours for me to get that last 100 ft.

:thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown Quite truthfully if you tow a lot - as I do - you are better off with a real SUV.
The 6 cyl Trailblazer tows sooo much better.... I'm going back to one soon, or the other 6 cyl GM's.

You have to choose... gas milage or real towing capability.

You need to look very close to find the harness plug. I took over a half hr. Once the rear compartment is off, the trailier adapter is covered in grey foam and is tucked below the tail light harness and hidden under a bundle of wires. Will try to post pics. Look carefully!

Towing again

Hello

Read the post on towing... just wondering if there are any updates. I'm thinking about getting the highlander, but am concerned about the towing.

I have a chalet arrowhead tent trailer and want to enjoy it.
There appears to be some challenges with hills and wet/snow. in Oregon that may not be a good deal.

Any new experiences?

Reverse (electric?) and Towing

I backed a trailer up my driveway today and my driveway is a pretty steep hill, I noticed that reverse seems to only run off of the batteries. By the time I finished parking the trailer my batteries were pretty well drained.

Does anyone know if there is a mechanical reverse that is driven off the engine in case the batteries run down?

Will it pull the boat out

Just a question from a non owner.

But I'm considering this for my next vehical.

I need to know if it can pull my boat (17 foot fishing boat) out of the water. The landing I us is all sand and 4wd is necessary. All 4 wheels have to have power to them or I just get stuck.

Is the highlander hybrid up to the task?

There is no way the engine can help move mechanically the car backwards but it can recharge the battery. For 4wd-i, be aware that MGR (rear motor) is not water cooled and will shut down if overheated. So if you have to go a long way backwards with a load, pause frequently when battery is low to cool down MGR and recharge the batteries.

It has enough power and descent towing capacity, but Toyota has a disclaimer that states, "The Highlander Hybrid is not designed to be driven off-road." You may need a 4-wheel drive system that locks in the center for equal distribution of torque (50/50) to the front and back. Remeber your tires play a big role in traction, too. If 4wd is absolutely necessary, then I would consider a 4Runner, although the fuel economy would not be there.

I was reading and I understood it has real 4wd, as apposed to All wheel drive.

I'm not sure I need to lock the differentials, at least I haven't had to yet on my Mazda MPV (generation 1) which can operate in 2wd, 4wd, or differential lock modes.

the gas highlander still uses an on demand all wheel drive system with no locking center differential

Which, based on your prior post appears to be all you would need since your prior truck didn't need the locking diff either. As an FYI, there ARE reports of 4x4 Highland Hybrid's getting stuck in mid-level snow (8 to 12 inches). The FACT is that the Hybrid 4wd system is NOTHING like a traditional 4x4 system. It works OK for "very light" duty snow but will NOT work for sand or deep mud. In fact, you can't even SPIN the wheels INTENTIONALLY on the Hybrid's. You push down on the accelerator and NOTHING happens. It's GOT to be pretty frustrating when it does happen. having said all that I have had success in light (under 6 inches) of fresh snow in the W. Virginia mountains so while it may work for snow, I would not try it in sand.

What are you currently using to pull your boat out of the water?

We use our old ass 93 mazda mpv mini van to tow our 17ft boat :lol:. The underpowered 3L RWd does the trick. The tires sometimes spin a bit due to being on gravel but it does the job. Im pretty sure a newer highlander is capable (not sure about hybrid though)
