Buyer beware

I bought the Platinum Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement and it cost me $2,499 at Jim Fauk Lexus in Beverly Hills, California. At the time, I believed that Toyota Motors could only be honorable since I am myself, born in Japan.

My vehicle simply dies while trying to start or while driving, the freeway or highway. It's frightening. I had the Highlander looked over at John Elway's Crown Toyota Customer Service twice now to get it fixed for the exact same problem. Today was the third time the Highlander would not continue to run so it was towed from Chino Hills to Ontario.

The tow truck driver couldn't get it started and towed it 35 miles. Thank goodness for Triple AAA autoclub! The Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement Customer Service representative stated that their warranty for towing is charged to the warranty holder first and if a battery is involved, such as a "jump" is needed or battery is even suspected, the warranty holder is liable for all towing charges. The Toyota service contact customer service representative asked my wife whether the tow truck driver "jumped" the truck at anytime. Later, I was to find out that if she said "yes", the warranty is void and the tow would have cost me nearly $200! Like I said, I have a premium AAA towing membership.

The nightmare continues. Remember, this is a multiple visit under Toyota's most premium warranty, their PLATINUM.

The Crown Toyota service manager calls my wife and tells her that the truck started 3 hours after the truck is delivered to their service bay. The service manager tells my wife that he "sees" nothing wrong with the Highlander because it started. That he thinks he knows what is wrong with the truck but it will cost me $398 to do the valve job that is typical problem with this truck model. He elaborated further after my wife told him that she is frightened to drive the truck anymore, that Toyota will not do a computer diagnostics on the truck to see what is wrong because the vehicle started up at the service bay. My wife told him that the truck would not have been towed if it didn't run and that the tow truck driver couldn't get it started.

John Elway's Crown Toyota in Ontario, California's Customer Service Manager informed my wife that it would cost me $98 to perform a computerized diagnostic to find out the problem is and it would cost me the total amount for repairs as necessary which are both not covered under the Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement.
"The warranty is not in effect if the automobile runs" is what the Service Manager stated. My wife asked him what is the purpose of the warranty if they will not diagnose and correct an obvious safety issue? The vehicle has been taken for warranty service before and that service was denied even when they knew the warranty and defect is valid.

Perhaps Toyota's Corporate Customer Service and John Elway's Crown Toyota has a changing interpretive policy for premium Toyota warranty or I am simply a victim being scammed $2,499 for a warranty which in my current situation that is worthless.

I happen to like Toyota cars and trucks. When I owned my own business, I had 2 Four Runners and an Avalon. My step-son bought a Tacoma recently, my brother-in-law a Tundra, sister-in-law a 460H Lexus, my son a Corolla and am considering a Lexus for myself and I was going to give the Highlander to my wife...until now. My whole family and extended family are Toyota Motors fans. There is nothing like a Toyota. I gave up my MBZ and Porsche habits.

At this point, since Toyota Customer Service Center is unsupportive to the letter of the warranty, I would think that buyers of the warranty should consider whether the warranty is a waste of money since service to me on a valid warranty and safety issue is denied. Perhaps the vehicle's standard warranty is the best deal.

Oh, I still love the vehicle and I will pay out-of-pocket money to do;
the $98 for computerized diagnostic service to find out what makes the truck die randomly and whatever valve job or transmission cost of a defective vehicle because my life is worth much more.

It seems I wasted $2,499 for Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement, Toyota's best warranty.

I will pay to repair a truck under warranty simply because they were able to coax it to start after 3 hours, not driving it, just starting it. To not find out the problem.

Had my cousin the lawyer look at the warranty. No where does it state that they have to find an intermittant problem regardless of safety issues.

Update on Toyota's Platinum Service

I started out the morning to call in and inform my supervisor that I will be late going into work to make phone calls to get my Toyota serviced.

Called 1-800-228-8559 and spoke with "Adam" the first line of customer service and then after a brief description of my problem requested and spoke with his supervisor, "Jason".

I told Jason of my current situation of John Elway's Crown Toyota of Ontario and their assessment of my vehicle. That Crown Toyota got the car to start and thus they see no problems. That they did not perform a computerized diagnostics to address my health and safety concerns driving the vehicle. That this time the Toyota Highlander was towed because it wouldn't run.
Carefully explained how the Customer Service Manager of John Elway's Crown Toyota of Ontario stated that they did not perform a computerized diagnostics on the vehicle that it would cost me $98 out of my pocket to do so and that the price of $388 to perform a repair that might fix this typical problem would also be not covered because the repair would be voluntary.

All told, Jason, the Customer Service Supervisor of Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement contact stated was that he only handles claims by dealers who submit bills and that he has no authority to request anything. That what I choose to pay is at my cost and unrefundable. That safety of the vehicle is my concern and not of Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement and that no where is it in the Agreement that addresses my safety of Toyota vehicle to the Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement contract. I simply realized that the Platinum Service, Toyota's finest is not backed up by its claims of premium service, care or customer safety.

I then called Jim Falk Lexus of Beverly Hill, the car dealership that I originally bought the Highlander and Platinum Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement. I was directed to the Finance Department who then told me to contact Dave Newman, their Customer Service Manager to explain the situation, that I bought the Highlander at Jim Falk Lexus and also the Platinum Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement. He said that I should talk to Dave and to have the vehicle thoroughly checked and leave it their until they find and fix the problem.

I left a phone message for Dave to call me.

Thus far as I sit here, I am not impressed with what the Customer Service Supervisor stated.

1. He is not authorized to service any customer's safety concerns.
2. The Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement is purely at the disposition of the Toyota Dealership to service or not to service.
3. That it may take a vehicular collision to determine that the vehicle was unsafe.
4. The level of "unfound" problem does not include computer diagnostics or any common sense trouble shooting to assure the customer that there maybe a problem.
5. Quote, " You really do not understand what the Service Agreement covers and what it doesn't cover..." I was lead to believe and I paid for what was written that the Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Agreement covered mechanical and electrical service - bumper to bumper. I bought believing that Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Agreement would protect me in the event this type of concerns would be covered.

Conclusion thus far.

I really did not know that Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement would not cover concerns regarding electrical and mechanical safety issues. That it would not cover computerized diagnostics, which is a simple plug and view operation. That all costs will be borne by the customer who paid for the Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement. That Safety of my life and family's is not a service but just simply a word to sell a product that does not perform...

I await Dave Newman, Service Manager at Jim Falk Lexus of Beverly Hills, California for his Dealership's service and whether they will stand behind their commitment to excellence.

Funny thing. Jason of Toyota corporate customer service stated what excellence Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement is and I replied, "How can you state that when I am not getting any service? That from my perspective, I had wasted 30 minutes talking to someone who will listen and do nothing because he cannot service customers with any authorizations even for health and safety issues."

I didn't read all of the preceding comments. Didn't have to. Saw enough.

This is a classic reason why I have never, nor will I ever purchase an "extended" warranty.

There are more loop holes in them, be they mfg-provided or otherwise, to keep a Philadelphia lawyer busier than he/she would care to be.

If you've benefitted from one of these....congratulations. I'd bet a buck that for every person who was pleased with the outcome, you could find 4 or 5 who felt otherwise.

By the way....no dealer or for that matter, independent of any size can do a"valve job" on a car today for $398.

Update:

I talk to the Service Manager of Jim Falk Lexus and he instructed me to go to the service manager of Crown Toyota and pay for the diagnostic service. If they find out the problem, they will reimburse me through the warranty. The best thing to do is to leave the truck there until the problem is found. This leaves me without a vehicle for a while. They are currently wandering around and from time to time starting the truck and driving it and parking it and so on. If I know fate as it has plagued others in history, the problem will not raise it's ugly head during the dealer's watch. So I am trying to make good of the day sitting here at the lounge area looking at infomercials, getting a cup of crummy coffee while my wife took off with the kid's Corolla to have her hair, pedicare and other essentials done. It's a sad lot in here. People with nowhere to go and left in the customer service lounge at the mercy of an unwanted incoming exploratory probing of the wallet right through unwilling pair of jeans. By the way, the sales people have nothing to do. The only activity of profit is the service area. A salesman was so desperate that I watched along with two dumbfounded couch huggers while he tried to pitch a sale to a hapless grandmother who was getting her oil changed on a late model Camry. I overheard her say the car only has 8 thousand miles on it and to leave her alone but the salesman kept on pitching unbelievably. We watched with big eyes like an owl in disbelief.

I feel your pain.
You know, my brother had the same bull @#$% warranty and Toyota never paid a dime towards any repairs. There was always something in the fine print.
I had a home warranty that the realtor bought and that was a joke as well. Every time there was something in the fine print and I always ended up paying.
I would tell anyone who tries to sell me an extend warranty to shove it up their @#$.
The normal warranty is the only one that really pays out.

Hello Im new to this site and wanted to let you know I bought a 09 Venza last month. Was offered the 7 yr 100000 mile plat. warranty for a unreal cost of $2900.00. I found on line the same plan for $945 from a dealer in MD what would you do? After reading some of your complaints Im having second thoughts. But its a new model and wondering what may happen in the future.

I bought my '05 Avalon from a Lexus dealership and purchased their extended warranty for my car. It's been great having it and has almost paid for itself. I've done business with the Toyota dealership nearby for 20 years and have always gotten outstanding service there. I realize how fortunate I am because I have access to a good dealership with a top notch service department.

Do a TN search on extended warranties, this topic has come up many times.

A TN search will also turn up the cheapest dealer, it might worth it if the cost is low enough. Some owners have paid for the plan in one repair covered under warranty.

Warranty service does vary with dealer, if unhappy with one dealer try another.

I've only had to have one thing replaced on my car with the platinum extra care 7 year 100,000 mile deal.

Not long after I got my 05 Corolla the CD changer jammed. I know that item is not covered under the regular extra care, but is by the platinum plan.

I had one dealer (the one closest to where I live) give me a total run-around about getting it replaced under the warranty, and then after a bit of argument, they told me there was a $50 deductible (my warranty is the $0 deductible one).

I called up the dealer I actually purchased the car from, which is a little further from me, and they were more than happy to order a new cd changer and replace it under the warranty with no hassle and no charges.

It all depends who you go to. Just because a dealer is required to do something (such as honor a warranty) doesn't mean they actually will, because they know that the general consumer will buy their BS and either pay for the fix outright, or go somewhere else.

The sad thing is, you will find dealers like this everywhere, from every brand of car.
