Toyota has announced a wide range of recalls affecting 6.39 million vehicles including 2.34 million in North America.

In total, five separate recalls and over a dozen different models are included in the safety bulletin, with issues ranging from faulty airbags to seat rails that do not lock in place.

The largest of the recalls is for a “spiral cable” that could become damaged by turning the steering wheel. If it does become damaged that could cause the air bag to not deploy in a crash. Vehicles affected by this recall include 3.5 million RAV4, Corolla, Matrix, Yaris, Yaris Sedan, Highlander, Tacoma, Camry and Pontiac Vibe models, with 1.67 million of those in North America.

A recall for 2.32 million more models is for driver’s seats that fail to lock into the adjusted position and could slide forward in an accident. Models in this recall include the Yaris and Yaris Sedan as well as the Scion xD, with 670,000 models affected in North America.

760,000 additional vehicles are being recalled due to steering column brackets that may fail after repeated and forceful operation, though no models in North America are included in this list.

Two smaller recalls include 160,000 vehicles being called back for faulty windshield wipers and 20,000 more for a possible fire hazard with the starter motor.

The recall comes amid an environment of heightened safety with General Motors recently announcing a recall of 2.6 million models for faulty ignition switches.

While large, Toyota’s latest spate of recalls is smaller than those surrounding past issues of sticking floor mats, which caused the automaker to announce a fix for roughly 9 million vehicles.

Probably has to do with GM and being on probation.

Do auto makers test components anymore? It's not like this is a new type of tech for cripes sake it's a length of ribbon cable in a plastic cylinder. Pathetic.

Looks to be older models and some are 10 years old+.

Normally this problem would likely be a customer pay issue. For some reason Toyota wants to pay for it.

A lot of this stuff seems to be over the top (like wiper blades).

Looks to me like they discovered problems with newer spiral cables. They were recalled a year or two ago on the Tacoma covering 2005-2008 and this recall adds 2009 and 2010 models.

Looks like Toyota doesn't want to be out done with the recalls. Not only beating GM with sales but they have to with recalls. That's excessive Toyota:lol::lol::lol:

Official Toyota Press Releases concerning recalls

http://pressroom.toyota.com/releases/toyota+safety+recall+spiral+cable+assembly+040814.htm
TORRANCE, Calif., April 9, 2014 – Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. today announced that it will conduct a voluntary safety recall involving approximately 1.3 million vehicles, including certain Model Year 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Tacoma, 2006-2008 RAV4 and 2006-2010 Yaris vehicles.

The driver’s airbag module in the involved vehicles is attached to a spiral cable assembly with electrical connections that could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned. If this occurs, the air bag warning lamp will illuminate. In addition, the driver’s air bag could become deactivated, causing it to not deploy in the event of a crash.

Toyota is not aware of any injuries or fatalities caused by this condition.

Toyota is currently preparing the remedy for this condition. For all involved vehicles, a Toyota dealer will replace the spiral cable with an improved one. Once preparations are complete, Toyota will send an owner notification letter by first class mail and the remedy will be provided at no charge.

TORRANCE, Calif., April 9, 2014 – Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. today announced that it will conduct a safety recall involving approximately 472,500 vehicles consisting of certain Model Year 2006-2010 Yaris Hatchback vehicles (approximately 158,000); certain Model Year 2007-2010 Yaris Sedan vehicles (approximately 250,500); and certain Model Year 2008-2010 Scion xD vehicles (approximately 64,000).

In the seat rail of the driver seat of the involved vehicles and also the front passenger seat of three-door models, the springs used for the mechanism which lock the seat rail in its adjusting positions could break. This can happen if the seat is adjusted forward and/or rearward with high frequency. If a seat rail spring breaks, the seat may not lock into the adjusted position. If the vehicle is operated with a broken seat rail spring, the seat could move in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant.

If the condition is present, an occupant may notice the following:
  • If both of the springs have broken, the seat will not lock into the adjusted position.
  • In limited instances, if a spring has broken and becomes stuck in the seat rail, the seat may only be capable of forward movement.
Toyota is not aware of any accidents or injuries caused by this condition.

Toyota is currently preparing the remedy. Once preparations are complete, owners of vehicles subject to this safety recall will receive an owner notification letter by first class mail.

The remedy, when available, will involve replacement of the seat track assembly at no charge to the customer.
