I received an e-mail from Toyota:

"How it works
You’ve already opted-in to share your vehicle driving data. And your new car is equipped to transmit data such as how fast you drive, how many miles you drive, longest drive, and shortest drive. So, all that’s left to do is drive the way you normally would.

After 13 weeks, we’ll be in touch to let you know if you may qualify for a discount on an auto insurance policy. It’s as simple as that."
I don't recall opting in on surveillance or the use of my driving habits or giving up my privacy for commercial purposes. Insurance offers may be the tip of the iceberg.

All I did was buy the car. No financing, no lease. I haven't signed up for other services. I've gotten a few E-mails asking me to sign up with "Toyota Owners" website but I haven't done that.

That doesn't sound right. There is no surveillance on Toyota cars. Thats sound like a phishing to get your information. Toyota doesn't help with lowering your insurance .Send it to your spam box and you won't get it no more

Yes, there is. It’s part of Toyota Safety Connect. One of the options is to send your vehicle driving data to Toyota insurance affiliates so that they can offer you insurance based on your driving habits. It’s called “usage-based insurance.”

If your car is equipped with Toyota Safety Connect/Remote Connect, it has the ability to transmit information about your speed, location, acceleration, etc. to Toyota.

You can log into your Toyota Owners account to disable the data transmission. For me, it was disabled by default, so maybe OP or someone at their dealer accidentally enabled it when setting up their account.

Thanks for the info. Now I might have to sign up for an account and agree to God knows what other invasions of my privacy there are in the fine print just to opt out .

That's a first that I ever heard about that. I had my car for 2 yrs and didn't get an email like that.Only insurance companies will ask for that info on their app,not Toyota.I can ask a couple of Camry groups.

You'll need to opt out of toyota's connected services to stop toyota from collecting driving data from you. Which will deactivate the remote connect, sos, navigation services, and etc. I don't care that toyota collects data on me but sharing it is what I'm concerned about.

It's opt-in, nobody is forcing you to do anything.

The hell you dont. Info is info is info... whether they share it with someone else is irrelevant.
People have gotten way to cavalier in regards to info and privacy.
Let's say you dig into the accelerator when leaving a light, or drive a bit fast on the highway, or turn a little 'hard' .....based on the data you dont care about Toyota having , maybe Toyota will say they aren't honoring the warranty because you 'abused' the car...

I want it of an out of my life. the minor convenience of checking the locks or windows and remote start are trivial. In fact I can Fob start the car ONLY if I subscribe to the service? BS

If anyone knows How I can un-SIM the car, I'd like to know.

Do you carry a cell phone? If so, this from Toyota is nothing in comparison. Your cell is constantly sharing info whether you consent to it or not. Traffic layers in Google Maps or Waze use your location unless the phone is in airplane mode, even if you didn't agree to anything or turn location off.

You sound paranoid. Maybe sell your Camry and buy something a few years older?

Perhaps.. nothing wrong with safeguarding your info, is there? or limiting who has access?

The point about phones is well made also....
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy...-finally-stopped-selling-phone-location-data/

The whole idea that your one needle in a haystack is irrelevant, and does not make me a tin-foil conspiracist..

I am on another forum, and there is a prolific poster that does code work. There is another forum member that can't stand 'him/her'.. Somehow the stalked has un-earthed an amazing pile of info on the programmer. Perhaps it was through the programmer's use of the same screen name across multiple sites, who knows...
The stalker had a real name, website info, linked-in profile , website registrations. addresses, facebook profile, friends and relatives.. The stalker sent a mass PM to other users about this person and went on all kinds of crazy tangents... The programmer is really a she, or was a he.. it was the stuff made for a movie.. people wanted to post publicly and confront the nut job,but no one wanted to be in 'selene's shoes...The stalker appears to be from Russia, but who knows..But they keep coming back under knew names, new IP's....

It doesnt take much these days for information to leak, and in the wrong hands...it can be bad...

Try taking the dcm fuse from the interior fuse box. That should stop toyota from collecting information. Though the EDR, Event data recorder, or the black box will continue to collect data but it will only be stored in the car and not pushed through the network.

The GPS doesn't need the internet for it to work, just power, but i can't find a fuse for that one. The gps module or cable is in the shark fin antenna.

For those who are residents in California. California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 has come into effect, jan. 1 2020. You can now submit a request to Toyota to either, delete all your personal information, do not sell your personal information or get all the personal information that Toyota has on you so you can see what they have. This does not effect the information that your dealer has on you or what they sell to third party companies. You'll have to go through the dealership where you bought the car to submit a request to stop.

I posted about this in the Tacoma forum, not going to retype. I have a few ideas about how to actually disable and some reasons why it's reasonable to be concerned about this stuff.

What I find most disturbing is that you were not informed about this when you bought it.

UPDATE

Just a little update. I have a 2021 Tacoma and it has all of the tracking mentioned above. You can disconnect the DCM (Data Communication Module) by pulling the fuse, so I have read. It still tracks and stores everything on the hard drive, but can't transmit. When you go to Toyota for service they will connect to the vehicle and download everything then.

I wonder how Toyota will respond when you disconnect. Will they try to void the warranty because they can't see everything about your motor, temperature, acceleration rate...? I have contacted 4 dealers and requested them to contact me and not one has. It musty be some kind of taboo.

Here's some thing I found on the web. "DCM is an in-vehicle communication device. It sends CAN (controller area network) information connected to various in-vehicle ECUs (control computers) to Toyota's dedicated cloud service once a minute."
