I got a screaming deal on used Lexus Wheels for my RAV4. I plan on mounting my winter tyres onto the wheels. I will be keeping my factory Toyota wheels mounted with the factory A/S Tyres along with TPMS. My question, is that if I install TPMS Sensors into spare wheels, will the TPMS Computer be able to store the winter rim sensor id? Or while I need to have the TPMS sensor id swapped every time I change wheels? Finally is there a difference between the TPMS Sensors sold at Tirerack.com as compared to those sold by Discount Tire or Costco?

You’ll have to enter the TPMS ID numbers every time the wheels are swapped.

Can’t answer your question about the TPMS sources.

Only way to avoid needing a relearn procedure done every wheel swap other than buying your own TPMS tool that has OBD2 capabilities is to find a shop that can clone your existing sensors. Swap and go. Nothing else to do if wheels are same size. Thats what I did. 8 new Autel MX-1 sensors and an Autel TS-508 TPMS tool (needed 4 for new winter rims and OEM had one that had died) Cloned both sets as exact copies of my OEM sensors that went bye-bye.

Are cloned sensors specific to a brand or can sensors of any manufacture be cloned?

There's different types. Some are pre-programmed like OEM and aren't cloneable. When you order online most won't sell you blanks and pre-program to your vehicle but don't wan tot clone your IDs.

I'm mostly familiar with the Autel brand. Love them since the only company that makes the tools and the sensors. The MX-1 supports 98% of vehicles and is (to my latest knowledge) the only dual frequency 315 and 433 mhz and is also the only re-programmable sensor in the market. It can be whatever you want it to be. The sensors come as blank duds. Then they are programmed according to make and model. Support both LO-LINE (no position display TPMS light only) and Hi-LINE (cars with the location display) applications.

Many shops have them as they are one item for all applications. Plus for a while they were giving a TS-508WF free with all orders of 20 sensors. (not sure if they still do) Many Fleebay sellers split them up and sell off the tool and/or sensors separately also.

Check if the sensors in the wheels you got are same as yours and if they are get a tool only (OBD2 capabilities) or with Techstream and enter the IDs (relearn procedure) every swap.

My complete kit cost me $423 CAD shipping and taxes included from a seller on Amazon . ca in Sept 2021. The tool has lifetime free upgrades and can even reprogram a sensor while installed in tire, Cheaper than 8 sensors alone.

Thanks for the info everybody. I found a local, independent tyre repair shop that did the work for me. They installed universal blank TPMS sensors into my wheels then cloned the id numbers from factory Toyota TPMS sensors. Now I can sway my wheels from all season to the winter set without needing to visit the tyre shop. As a bonus the shop only charged me $60 USD per wheel for sensors and labour.

Great decision. I opted for cloning even if I have a TPMS tool but why risk the tool or the VCX Nano dying just when I need it. Now it makes a great tire pressure gauge.

What brand did they install?

I believe the brand is called Pacific. They said they are the same brand sold by most of the local shops that sell universal sensors.

Just starting to play with OBD bi directional reader.... there are extra blank spaces for your TPS in the computer.

So if you learn the extra tires, do not need to make changes when you swap. Car will see the sensors and you can update with a push of the dash button like you added air to the tires. This is my understanding. OBD Xtool 8 just arrived but this is my understanding.

I also have extra set of rims..... and want full size spare.... donnut spares limited to 50mph or similar
