Can I swap a 1988 5spd truck w56 tranny into a 1990 truck that has a 22re that had a w55 tranny. My truck is a 5spd also ? Thanks... Dan

If they are both 2WD it shouldn't be a problem.

they are both 4 wd and unfortunately the tranny is nearly 100 miles away so I am unable to compare the shifter positions... maybe I can get him to take a picture or 2 of it and email it to me.... Thanks... Dan

The W55 never came on a 4WD.
Now if they are both W56's and you are sure of the years, they won't swap without swapping the t-case too, because of shifter positions.

almost all the parts of the W series trannies (except a few of the newest ones have beefed up selecter forks) are interchangeable. even if the new one didn't match perfectly, you could swap your housing and t-case.
