Hey guys, hopefully one of your bright minds can guide me.

Recently i bought my truck from my neighbor
1993, sr-5, v6 5sp manual, 4wd, miles as of right now sit at 195XXX

he absolutly babied this truck, did everything on schedule, went leaps and bounds to make sure everything was done right, kept all service records.

being the 17 year old that i am,(no this wasnt my first manual car/truck) and having knowledge that 'yota's can only be stopped by rust, i took my truck off-roading, while out at the spot, a guy comes up, ask's if i can tow him out, i told him sure, i can try, we hook up, pulling him out, i get stuck, we unhook, i spend 45 minutes getting un stuck, after i do, i tell him tough poop, i cant get him out.

now i was pretty worried about pulling him out, because i didnt want to mess up my pretty much virgin truck. i guess trying to do the right thing was the wrong idea. the past couple of days, reverse has been a real pain, it acts like the clutch isnt fully depressed when i go to engage it. i talked to my yota buddies and my local mechanic/boss ( who owns 2 yotas) my buddies tell me its normal, bc of such high mileage, my boss tells me its my synchro's.

today coming to work, pulling out of my drive way, first was extremely hard to get into, as was second, third was just fine. after i cleared 3rd, 1st and 2nd were like butter, not a prob. stop at a stop sign, same thing... now im really worried, because it JUST started acting up. get to work, talk to my boss, he ask's for me keys, starts it up, 1st and 2nd work fine, he laughs and says "operator error" i tell him to wait a min. we sit there, he tries 1st no dice, 2nd, same thing, 3rd, just fine, then 1st and 2nd are fine as well. he puts it in neutral, waits, trys 1st/2nd, nothing, goes too 3rd, its fine. repeat x5. he gets out and flat out tells me, my tranny is going bad, synchro's have had it. he says last year he got a new tranny for his '83 and it was 1,600 w/o labor. i sigh and said ok, and he tells me that he will cut me a deal.

i dont have school tomorrow's so im going tranny shopping, going to the local places to see what they say and what the price is gonna be.

anyone have this problem, any temp solutions?

tl;dr-im a noob to this truck and you should really help me out

tranny

I just replaced my tranny on the exact same truck. I was lucky to find one for $200. Same problem as you describe.

In the process, I opened the transmission to look for the culprit. Syncros were bad and the main bearing is bad. I was told the main bearing is a common thing to go bad on manual trannies.

If you are going to replace the tranny or fix it, look into replacing the clutch at the same time. Be careful where you buy it. I bought one from Auto Zone and that piece of sh&^ pressure plate was defective so the tranny had to come down twice. I bought a Center force Clutch. A little more expensive but grabs hard.

I don't know where you live, but in California we have craigslist.com. That's where I found the tranny for $200. And so far so good....

Good luck kid. Ohh and you did the right thing in trying to bail someone out. It was just a matter of time before the tranny took a dump.

DO NOT REPLACE ANYTHING YET!

I have seen this problem so many times before, 95% of the time it can be fixed for under 35 dollars.

Go to www.marlincrawler.com and order their shifter seat and bushing kit.

Awhile back I lent my truck to a friend, when I got it back the next day I lost 5th and reverse... they were totally gone.

I read on the net about this product, I said "hey, its better then 1500+ for a new tranny". Put it in at the same time I put in my marlin clutch... wow.

It made my truck shift like new!

The marlin crawler bushings are probably the best cheap modification/maintenance you can do when you buy a 'yota. :) I've got his bushings in my '94 pickup, and my supra. :)
