trd offroad package worthwhile?

I've been messing with the "build and price" on toyota.com and I keep adding in the trd offroad package almost every time. I find myself wondering, however, if the "upgrades" are worth the $3k extra.

The edmunds site says that the TRD offroad package includes:
Includes cruise control, sliding rear window with privacy glass, chrome grille surround and rear bumper, color-keyed front bumper and overfenders, metallic tone I/P, upgrade fabric, leather wheel and shifter, sunvisors with mirrors and extensions, SR5 badging, driver's seat lumbar support, off-road suspension, Bilstein shocks, 16" x 7" alloy wheels, P265/70R16 tires, locking rear differential, limited slip differential, fog lamps, skid plate (engine/transfer case), 115V/400W deck power point, sport seats and TRD Off-Road graphics.
The key parts of this that I'm interested in are the cruise, rear window, higher stance, rear diff, and 115/400w. I don't care about the cosmetic features.

Is it possible to get the features I want for less, either aftermarket or from the factory/dealer? It looks like the cruise and rear window, at least, are available as part of the $1500 SR5 package.

Is the AC power worth a damn? I'm just looking to charge tool and RC car batteries from it.

Is the stance really noticeably higher? Assuming I can get the cruise and rear diff from the factory, would I be better off going with aftermarket suspension and parts to get the same stance?

the ac outlet sucks. you can add your own later.

just get the sr5 package if you dont need the rear locker. I have the sr5 package. The rear slider is standard I think. The stance is the same on the sport and the off road and the standard Sr5 packages.

that's exactly the kind of info I'm looking for, thanks.
If you can get the sport seats and locker with a different package, I'd go with that. You may consider the seats cosmetic, and not me interested, but they are the most comfortable seats I've had in a vehicle. They are also the only ones that don't hurt my wife's back after 2 surgeries. Even the house and office chairs get to her after a while.

I can imagine you spending at least $1k on the locker alone aftermarket so that's a big chuck of the TRD price tag.

For the the leather trim, I'm glad I have it as it's not as cold in the winter or as hot in the summer as a normal steering wheel and shifter. I usually buy wheel covers, but they fall apart quickly. And I didn't want to mess with swapping the shift knob imediately after purchase. I like having the shift pattern on there for the occasional repair shop visit so the tech KNOWS it's a 6-spd and how to shift it.

The mirror extnesions nice too. Granted it a small thing I could live without, but it's nice to have when the sun is on the driver's side. My car's visors without them are almost useless so I never bother with them. Easier to hold my hand up!

Basically it came down to a lot a little things the package included that I'm glad are there. Would I have added them seperatly if I could? :dunno: Don't know if I'd really think I needed/wanted them at the time. The dealer had 2 4x4 trucks in Indigo Ink, 1 6spd and 1 auto. So I took the 6spd, and found out after the deal all the little bells and whistles. I'm glad they are there now regardless of whether I would have requested them or not.

I got the SR5 in 4WD. I didn't need the locker. The cruise/slide window were std. The only thing that I liked better in the TRD was the upholstery. I did change the Dunlops to Revo's. If I had to change anything, I might put BFG AT's instead. I like my truck as it is and don't regret getting the SR5.
I got a trd sport and it's great. I couldn't see myself driving anything else. And I saw that lotust doesn't like his ac outlet, well I love mine. I go camping all through the spring, summer and fall and it comes in very handy. Also when airing up and down your tires it's great to have a pump you can just plug into. All 4 tires in like 10 mins. We take a blender camping, a 25 inch tv with satelitte for tailgating. Good times.
Purchased the TRD "Off-Road package" and no regrets. I love the Bilstein shocks and suspension setup, awesome sport seats, 120V power outlet in the bed, and locking differential. I test drove a Tacoma with the TRD "Sport" package first, but the glare reflecting off the hood scoop annoyed me. The only options I regret not getting were the side impact air bags and factory tow package. I purchased a "one only at this price" advertised truck in the color I wanted at a killer price ($21.9-arrived at dealer before they opened to snag it) so I am very happy.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. You got these features and wish you hadn't, or didn't get them and wish you had?

Correct! I do not have either one. I did install an aftermarket receiver hitch recently.
The locking diff and the 16" rims were my positive differences between the OR and Sport packages (although I do like the looks of the hood scoop) but the tow package is what really sold me on this truck. I figure here in AZ the factory oil and trans cooler simply equate to longer life of the drivetrain.
I want the tow package regardless of what other options I choose. My understanding is that to get this I have to get one of the TRD packages or the SR5.

Almost! I went in to scope out the "8 at this price" Toyota Of Orange Tacoma ad, but they only had 1 left and it was in bright red. I knew I wanted the awesome Silver Mica color and did not want to settle and regret my decision afterwards. It was such a killer deal that I even test drove the red one. I actually went in to sign the papers but had the salesman double check his inventory for a different color before signing the papers. By the time he came back to tell me this was the last TRD Tacoma ad truck on the lot, I walked out of the dealership and decided to be patient and find one is silver. 3 weeks later I found a Toyota of Buena Park advertisement in the Friday classified ads. It's the Tacoma I ended up buying.
Vehicle are a depreciating asset and I always buy advertised "loss leader" ad vehicles. You get a vehicle that was never abused, smoked in, wrecked, flooded, etc. People are not as ethical as they were in the past, and scamsters are more rampant now than ever. The downside is you need to be patient, the ad vehicle may not have the exact options you are looking for, and you must arrive at the dealership before they open. The Friday "loss leader" classified ad vehicles are usually sold by Saturday. If they do have anything left over it's usually painted in some ugly color.

Not sure about 07, but for 06 the fabric and build of the seats was different with the TRD packages (off road and sport) and without (such as SR5). If that's still true you need to spend some time sitting in both types of seats and find out which you like better. I much prefered the TRD seats and that was one of the biggest reasons I got the off-road package.

Good obs on finding that fri loss leader price. I got my 06 d/c trd offroad silver mica from the toy of orange ad. i brought the ad to the cerritos dealership (work in the city) and they told me they could match that price but only for one day. The supposed sales mgr tells me he will check and see if they have a silver one and will call me back. 10 hrs later (my work day) I don't hear a thing from him. I give him a call and the receptionist tells me he has gone home for the day and if I would like his voicemail. She connects me and I leave a message that I will take my business elsewhere. Picked up my taco the next day at orange.
