I know it sounds trivial, but when I look at the dipstick the fluid is smeared all over and it is impossible to judge the level. Any advice?

I changed transmission fluid about 10k back, put in just as much as I drained. I wonder now if I should be adding some (like I have to do for engine oil)?

You're checking it with the transmission warm and engine running correct?

Pull the dipstick and wipe it completely dry, then insert it all the way until seated and pull it back out in one quick motion, then see if its easier to read using that method.
