trouble going into 4wd Low?

1424 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  ruger11mcrdpi
hey guys,

I have a question about engaging into 4x4 low. My truck goes fine into and out of 4wd hi, but I cant seem to get it into 4wd low. I can park ona flat surface, push in the clutch, shirft int o4wd low and the light will just blink and beep, and never engage. I tried putting it in reverse and backing up a bit then going foward and it still wont do it. I'm not a mechanic nor am I an avid offroader so I figured maybe I was missing something simple, or was just retarded or something. Can someone shed some light on this for me?

thanks

You have to wear the "new" off the gears. It is a pain the first dozen or so times, but it will get easier. Try Locking in 4HI, stop, switch to 4LO, slowly let out the clutch while turning the steering wheel. Repeat as necissary, it will go in. Once you get it figured out do it once a week for a couple of months to get things working smoothly. After 15-20 engagements it will slip right in. It takes a while to break in a virgin transfer case.
Do you put the transmission in neutral when you turn the switch to 4lo? I don't know if you have to on a manual transmission, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Looks like if you let out the clutch it cancels the shift. Interesting... I may have not noticed because I unplugged my clutch switch a year ago. I have to push the Clutch start cancel switch to start it, but it keeps the wife from borrowing it, lol.
Depressing the clutch is the main thing. The clutch switch must be made!

Hoof?
funny , I thought I could spin my auto into 4L with it in drive, It beeped and blinked,
I thought this is crazy and pretty dam ugly, so I put it back in 4H, I found out I needed
to go into park or neutral. I have not had the truck in anything that 4H could not handle.
This would only include deep, sand beach environments. even pulling huge logs back
to camp worked in 4H. Now that I know how to get the dang thing in 4L I cant wait to
see what the diffrence will be. I like my old F250, when you shifted into 4L there was
no DOUBT Im in granny gear now.

I find that if I stand on the clutch pedal it will engage every time.I probably need the clutch pedal recall where they cut your carpet.Slipshod
May want to also check out the clutch pedal feel TSB. One of the "complaints" is difficultly engage 4wd.

I would take it to the dealer and tell him about it, and that you have heard there are a couple of TSB's out regarding your problem.
Main thing is to use it. I use 4wd hi and lo at least once a month, usually more. After 2 years she goes in much better than when new.

In fact, she was in 4lo for a couple hours today. Was much needed with rain, sleet, and snow, it was a major mudfest. Was cutting firewood on far end of my neighbors farm. Pulled stumps and cut plenty of free wood to fill my bed (with extender), enough where couldnt see out the rear window.
hey everyone thanks for the help. I'm going to go screw with it for a little while in the parking lot and see whats up. if I cant get it I'll go to the dealer. I fortunately have great service here at this dealer so like and allstate customer I guess Im in good hands.
