hey guys...here's the scenario...i went to start my 97' tacoma last nite and with the turn of the key i got nothing...i then turned the key a second time and it started fine...the same thing happened several times again today...first turn of the key = nothing...second turn = starts fine...i cleaned the battery terminals and connections and put the battery on a charger and it was fully charged..i really dont know what could be causing it to start only on the second turn of the key...any ideas or hints as to what could be the problem??...thanks

It may be the clutch switch. There's a plunger that activates when you press the clutch, allowing the truck to start safely. My 97 has a cancel button on the dash by my left knee which overrides this. Try starting it with that button pressed, just make sure it's in neutral!

Another possibility is the starter itself. I had this same situation going on for about a year, it would randomly not want to start when I turned the key. I ended up replacing the starter, and haven't had it happen since. Do a search & you should pull up quite a few posts about rebuilding starters to remedy that situation as well.

the truck starts fine now with no problems....i do remember washing the truck before the problem started and since it was recently lifted water can splash into the lower half of the engine and adjacent parts...maybe something got wet and once dried out the problem resolved itself....anyone know what causes ur truck not to start right away if something gets wet?...thx
