I have decided I need to get an alarm installed in my Toyota. I was wanting some input from people on brands, accessories, what do look for, etc. Where did you get your alarm? What brand is it? Anything else that you think will help me out. Thanks for the help!

I had a Viper 881XP in my truck, it was nice but I didn't like the fact that I had to by pass the engine immobilizer to make the remote start operational. I removed it and installed the Toyota RS3200 Plus with glass break sensor...its factory and it works just as well, Most thieves will break in to a truck regardless of an alarm if there is something they really want. But for the not so serious crooks a blinking led in the dash is all it takes to deter them.

I bought my RS3200 plus from trdparts4u.com

Anything from DEI is good, I.E. Viper, Python, Clifford etc... they pretty much run the market. Just depends on how much you want to spend!

I have the Clifford Matrix 50.7X

For the most part, I like it, but it does appear to be a little buggy.

Sometimes, the remote doesnt get the message right away from alarm triggers and such. There's several seconds delay randomly.

Also, for some reason, when I use my remote start, sometimes it will not automatically lock my doors when I step on the brake pedal. It works at least half of the time though.

Also, when the shop first installed it, my sensitivity was shit. The impact sensor is built into the brain of the alarm. So they moved it and all was good with it.

The remote itself. Is very sluggish when you're configuring it. Like going through the menus and stuff.

I have had various Viper, Clifford and Venom alarms over the years and it seemed each had its own problems within the year of installation. It may be the installer more than the alarms, but I have only had good experiences with Compustar so far.

compustar

I have a compustar 3000ft. 2way FM alarm/remote start on my 09 O.R. installed for $509 and for an extra $80 I got a proximity radar, if anything comes within the line of my mirrors or against the window it warns 4 times before fully going off and the keychain vibrates and beeps..and if your windows are down and someone reaches in, it goes off fully even if they dont touch anything... for the price and piece of mind its the way to go !

I had a Compustar on my old Tacoma. I dont remember which model # is it though.
It had this remote, but gray.

The alarm itself was fine, zero problems with it. But the remote was a POS. It would keep resetting itself. I thought maybe the spring on the batter was loose. But tension was very tight. Called Compustar and they said it's a known issue and the shop will fix it. So I went back to the shop and they solder a couple of pins or something. Brought it back the next day. Same problem. They gave me a new remote. Worked fine for a couple of months then same issue.

Brought that back and got another 1. Worked fine for the most part for 2 years until I sold the truck recently. It would randomly do the reset, but maybe once every couple of months or so. Not like everyday or when you try to disarm or arm. That BINGO midi was starting to drive me nuts, lol.

The thing I dont like about the Compustar is the alarm antenna. It is relatively large.

The nice thing about the Toyota VIP RS3200+ is that since it's factory, it's plug-and-play. Whoever installs it (you or the dealer) doesn't need to splice any wires. You buy the alarm brain and a wiring harness specific to your year and model, and then everything just plugs in.

I have the same one. The only problem i had was the remote key chain piece broke off so I had to carry the remote and keys around separately for few weeks. Other than that it has been great. It was a PITA to install.

I had Toyota install the VIP alarm right when I purchased the truck. Added on about $400 bucks to the total amount financed. Worked fine for the most part, nothing special. I later last year purchased the Python 990 2-way with Remote Start and have been very pleased with it. I got it for $150 directly from DEI through my buddy that worked at Circuit City. I then paid $100 under the table to the audio installer at Circuit City to install it for me. Reatail it goes for $500-600 installed. I go through AAA batteries like no tomorrow in the remote though. Daily I use my remote start about 2-5 times. Works like a champ. As far as the alarm itself goes, I have tested it by kicking my Rock Rails and it will go off. It will also go off if somebody turns the ignition to the start position and etc.

Oh FYI, the Circuit City installer removed the VIP alarm when he installed the Python and said that it was about $40 worth of parts. I still have the little black box, not worth the $400 I paid for.

I heard that parts cannot be bought directly from DEI, which sucks because I am within walking distance from their main location here at my work in Vista, CA.

I have an AutoPage 2-way alarm and remote start with a 1/2 mile range. I've had it since I bought my truck 3 years ago and haven't had a problem since. The range is great and 2-way is needed when you start your truck from 1/4-1/2 mile away from inside a building and can't see if it actually started or not! They retail for around $400-500 installed depending on what model you get.

Autopage also has a new product called C3 that works through an app on your cell phone. You can arm, disarm, start, and even GPS track your car from anywhere you have cell phone service! There's an annual fee that you pay for the service but it's really cool and I'll probably get it on my next vehicle. If you have kids that you let borrow your car, you can always know where they are and how fast they're driving when you're not around!

I've got a clifford 2 way, without the remote start. Same range as others have mentioned, adjustable sensitivity to vibration, etc etc etc. I didn't get the auto window control or any other fancy stuff. Going to add a tailgate pin this summer.

Someone said its the same as a Viper, without the advertising. Dunno about that part.

I installed my own tailgate switch myself on my alarm recently. I didnt want to use the standard version due to it being exposed to the elements. So I searched online until I found something that might work better.

Wired it up to the hood pin on my alarm. We'll see if it last a year or more.

I have the viper 791xv. I'm happy with it. If you're interested I can install an alarm for you with remote start. I'm not an installed but I've installed dozens of the viper alarms and I'm located in Auburn. The immobilizer is only by passed when remote start is being used. If someone got in the car and triggered the shut down feature (brake or rpm increase) or the alarm the by pass will turn off and the immobilizer will start to work like Toyota designed it to. The by pass gets a turn on signal from the alarm and that signal is only sent when the truck is being remote started.
