I chase tornados each spring in a tank we built around a ford 450. I just recently got a 02 tundra 4x4 as a support vehicle to film the tank being hit by a tornado. I want to modify the Tundra so that it has a wider wheel base(for stability), tires that are perfect for muddy roads(because if you get stuck you might die), maybe even lower it a bit so we don't get hit by too much wind. But it still needs to carry about 1,400 lbs of cargo. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

For the tires I would go with BFG Mud Terrains they are very good and wil carry a heavy load because of thier thick side walls. The 1400 pounds depends is it one big item or a lot of stuff that can be spread out? If it is a lot of stuff spread out over the whole bed at most helper springs is all that you hould need. Depending on the condition of the springs in your truck. If it is one big item that maybe needs to be kept near the back of the truck you will need to go to a spring shop and get thier help.
As far as lowering it a bit thats a trade off because you don't want to get hung up on something. Lots of auto stores sell kits for lower vehicles or you could see the man at the spring shop.

Our tank(TIV) was on the national geo channel and a couple of news outlets last month, you might have seen our monstrosity there.

I'd also second the BFG's for the Mud. Also agree that with the helper springs recommendation for that added cargo weight. Wouldn't that added weight in the bed help keep the truck stable in high winds.

By the way, saw the program on national geo channel with your tank on it and really enjoyed it. It was too cool when the twister passed over it! Wasn't there some talk in the program about an IMAX film?

You chase Tornado's in CA?
I was just thinking the same thing...

They have mudslides, earthquakes, wildfires, but I have never heard of a tornado in California (except in the Day after Tomorrow, which was a movie).

I saw the show about your tank and your chase for tornados. I think it was great you were able to do that. It didn't look like you had an easy time with it. I hope your able to get what expected out it. Will you be doing more tornado chasing?
