Understanding the math of wider rims

Hey all

I am picking up a 07 Tacoma 4x4 Access Cab SR5 on Friday. I expect to be getting 5100's up front set to at least 1.75", perhaps 2.5" with a Toytec diff drop. I want to get wheels for it as well. I really like the ATX Artillerys. Those are 16x9, 4.5" BS w/ -12mm offset and a 108mm bore. I am also considering Moto Metals 957 or KMC XD Revolvers with the same OS and BS. I would put 265 tires on any rim I get. I'd like to get 8" rims but finding a set I like that fit or are available is hard!! :headbang:

My local wheel shop told me that 9" wheels may stick out too much for my liking, like close to 2inches. A 16x8 wheel with a 4.5" BS and a 0mm offset likely would not stick out far but I'd have more wheel options if I could consider 9 inch rims.

For those running a 9" wheel with 265 tires, do they stick out enough to flick road water up on the hood or that you can see when driving? How much would they stick out compared to the stock SR5 rims? How does one calculate how far an aftermarket rim would stick out compared to a stock rim? The SR5 rim is a 16x7.5 with a 5.25" BS and a +32mm offset if my research is correct. My math says 5.25 - 4.5 = .75" BS difference, add 1" for increased rim width on one side and I get 1.75" extra over a stock rim.

Also, those rims and many others have a 108mm bore. The Tacoma has a 106mm hub. Some people say Tacomas are hub centric, others say lug centric. I am just wondering if I would need hub centric rings with any 108mm wheel? 1010tire has them but not for a 108 to 106.

Thanks for any help on this

I have 17x9 XD revolvers but I am running 285's for my tires. They do throw a lot of debris from the road onto the truck, i haven't gotten any damage from it but it does get the truck dirty.

Yea they seem to stick out a ways don't they....you can really see it in your sig. I wonder if 265's would be noticably better...the width difference in a 285 and 265 is about 3/4"

But it looks awesome nonetheless lol

I do like to find the dirt roads and gravel paths and flicking up rocks etc does concern me

If you are comparing how much the 16x9 w/ 4.5" BS stick out compared to the 16x7.5 w/ 5.25" BS, then it would be a difference of 2.25".

Calculation:
16x9 w/ 4.5" BS means the amount of wheel sticking out past the mounting surface is 9"-4.5"=4.5"

16x7.5 w/ 5.25" BS means the amount of wheel sticking out past the mounting surface is 7.5"-5.25"=2.25"

The difference is then 4.5"-2.25"=2.25"

I just added Moto Metals to my truck: 17 x 9 with a -12mm offset. I attached some pictures below (No lift, no spacer, stock tire 265/65R17). Good luck!

Thanks for clarifying the math Trailblzr

Chris, those pics make a convincing arguement to go for the 17x9s.

I may opt for the Pro Comp 7098 wheels. They are 17x8, 4.5 BS and no offset. May be a safer bet.
