2010 Toyota Corolla Paint Problem - Chipping & Peeling

My mother has a 2010 Corolla purchased in July 2009 in New York. Metallic silver.

She takes meticulous care of her car and keeps it in the driveway. However, it has chipped and peeling paint all over the roof, and in multiple spots on the hood, trunk, doors, etc. In some cases it looks like the clear coat (maybe?) is peeling off in strange, irregular dime-sized spots; in other cases I can actually see black under a small chip.

Her last car, which was 10 years old -- also metallic silver, also kept in the driveway -- never had a single chip in it (maybe a scratch or two). And the paint job on my brother's 8 year old Saturn (kept in the same driveway) is also in mint condition.

Anyone else have this problem? She took it to the dealer, and they said, "Gee, that's weird." And that was it. So I accompanied her to the Toyota repair shop myself to ask them to fix it. Took it in this morning, waiting on word from the shop.

My whole family drives toyotas and has since the mid 1980's. Back then the Toyota silver was notorious for cracking and peeling similar to how you are describing. Something with the paint compound must have been wrong because the other colors never had that issue, only silver.

It took a long time to realize the problem because most didn't start having problems till several years down the road. In recent years t's been a non-issue so hopefully you just have a unique case where something went ary in the initial paint process and it's not a sign of return to the days of old.

Mine has that issue, but the front and rear bumpers and hood were resprayed, albeit poorly, because it was a rental car. I'm going to save up to get the bumpers and hood repainted and the blemishes on the roof fixed.

Hi everyone, just wanted to pass this information to you all. A coworker of mine had an opportunity to speak with a Toyota paint engineer.

They said that due to different sources of paint, paint produced here to paint US/Canada made corollas are more susceptible to fine streaks and less protected than the Japanese made ones. So try your best not to go to "soft touch" car washes and don't polish so hard.

They also revealed that parking under trees where sap can get on your paint is not an issue. The paint has been engineered to handle that. What it can't handle though is bird poop. So clean it off right away.

i have spots where my clearcoat is lifting off the car two on the trunk, one on the spoiler, and one on the hood. when i approached 2 different dealers about it, they really didnt care due to mileage and age.

it sucks. 3 years. they sure don't make care like they used to.

Maybe it's worse, maybe it isn't, neither have really durable paint these days though, and I see a ton of Japanese-made cars that have the same paint issues.

There are also a ton of other cars that are made in the North American plants with the same paint too, so it's not like this is some sort of isolated thing. :|

Matrix, RAV4, RX350, etc. are all made at the same plant in Canada, same goes for US plants, lots of Toyotas made there.

Thanks for the feedback. The peeling has gotten progressively worse, and Toyota claims it's "environmental" and thus not covered under my mother's 3-year warranty. So I'm looking for an alternative route to resolve the problem.

I don't believe this is a universal problem with Toyotas, obviously. I think it's simply an anomaly, an unfortunately defective paint job that should be corrected by Toyota -- I've truly never seen anything like it. And I don't understand why they're trying to escape responsibility for what is obviously an exceptionally bad paint job!

cd32409 pointed me to this thread.

The paint (clearcoat, actually) on my mother's 2010 Toyota Corolla started peeling after 2 years. The dealership, Westchester Toyota of Yonkers, NY, and Toyota's corporate office claim the damage is "environmental" and thus not covered under my her 3-year warranty.

As I said in the other thread, the extent of the peeing seems highly unusual and I'm guessing this isn't a universal problem with Toyotas (or everyone would be up in arms) -- but I don't understand why they're trying to escape responsibility for what is obviously a defective paint job!

This is yet another reason I will never buy Toyota again, even after having had an Avalon for 15 years.

Not that the car quality isn't generally good; but the service afterwards is basically, in a word, untrustworthy.

The company's DNA is to resist taking responsibility for mistakes, and to avoid solving problems, and to treat the customer like an imposition and afterthought.

I've seen this in one form or another across many regions of the US, and found it to be consistently true for literally decades.

A shame because when the cars are good, they're great.

This problem is more common now due to the switch to water based paint. I've spoken to many body/paint shops that have told me the same thing. :headbang:

Agreed, but that is not limited to North-American made cars or even just Toyotas.

I have created a Facebook group for others who are having this same issue. I have also began speaking with a lawyer who is looking into filing a class action lawsuit against Toyota, so the Facebook group will keep everyone updated about that. Just search for "Toyota Paint Problems Class Action Lawsuit" on Facebook to join.

To me the smartest thing anyone can do is apply a 3M Clearbra when buying a new car. My paint has held up great where it was applied.
