using auto tranny to drive like manual...

everybody knows that on an automatic tranny that there is P-R-N-D-2-L. Well, i know that revving from N then throwing into D isn't good for the car. But what if you started from L, then shifted up to 2, then into D. Would that be bad also or is it ok to do?

ive done that a few times
personally i think it is bad for the trans, so thus i dont do it anymore. :p:
ya its also very bad (i think from N to D is even worser)...but ive done it a few times myself..... its cool and all but dang, i just want a real manual now :D now i dont really shift to L or 2 during when i drive, if i use those gears, i come to a complete stop 1st, and then i shift ....
i usually use it to downshift during corners.. to get the weight to shift... usually i go from D to 2.. i dont think it will hurt the transmission though.. cuz so far its still running fine
:nono: drive the auto like how it was designed to be driven
umm the way i think of it is: why would they put a 2 and an L if you cant use it? might as just well put only the D in there..
DONT DO IT CAUSE ITS NOT MEANT TO
they put it there for safety reasons, like when you drive on ice put it in a lower gear.
just appreciate yer auto, though there isn't much to appreciate.

I win... well couldn't get the R to go down at all with stupid ASCII

Actually I really like the 7 speed automatic by Mercedes... wonder what the shifter looks like on that, don't think they use it on any production cars though.

Its pointless. When your at a deadstop the tranny is in L anyways.

L-2-D-overdrive.

Like 88 LE said... its pointless. If you are drag racing, your car will actually be SLOWER if you do it this way. If you are just driving around, you are wasting gas by doing it that way. At least it really doesn't hurt the tranny much.

My cousin does this and i tell him its bad for the transmission. Hes been doing it for almost 1 year and a half. His car is faster when he does it though, he even downshifts it when hes driving around, always keeping it in L or 2.

otherwise, i think thats all bad for the tranny...ive already had one dead auto trans in my camry cuz of that kind of fun

Basically you're doing what the tranny does all by itself anyway when you keep it at D, except you're doing it manually. Still in all, that is unwanted stress on the tranny because you're forcing the shift when you want to instead of when it's supposed to.

I did the same thing when using the 88 auto for pizza delivery. Later on, I had a tow truck delivered to me. :(

Lost Reverse, 3rd gear, & the overdrive capability.

Take the advice, don't do it....
I thought this thread was about what I do in my auto i4 gen3. When I stomp on the gas occasionally, I let it rev to about five, then let off the throttle. the car shifts and I stomp back on around three thousand. Its cool for freaking out my friends, they think im shifting. rest your hand on the gear selector while you drive and your set :) Id imagine this doesnt help the trans any either, but I dont do it often.
^lol ...so ur faking your friends into thinking your driving a manual ,
My cousin has a 99 Jetta (auto) and he beats the LIVING Daylights out of it, so one day he asked me "What would happen if i put my car into reverse while doing 30mph?" Hmm i dunno, lets try it. Much to my suprise, the car did nothing, it dropped itself into neutral, same thing when we drove and put it into park.

In my toyota manual, it explains how you can use your transmission, AUTOMATIC, to engine brake while driving. So im guessing that its not bad to do that to your car if its in the manual.
yeah i read that too...i never thought there was anything wrong w/ it other than the extra movement in the engine.
