Tried a Q in the fog light diameter thread with out a reply.

I have a 2010 V6 base. I have OEM factory fogs to install. I am one of the unlucky ones not pre-wired for fogs. That means I have to use a toggle/rocker switch in one of the blanks on the left of the steering wheel.

I see a few posts in the fog-diameter thread about using a non-OEM switch. Has anyone found one that actually fits with out hacking or modifying the knock out blanks? Maybe a Tacoma or Camry fog switch?

I also have and will probably put on the parts for sale list, a factory light stalk with fog control. It sells at the dealer for 139 bucks but I will take any reasonable or non-reasonable offer for that.:lol: I just need to get around to shooting a photo and doing it.

Couple years ago I installed Yaris fog lights from ebay similar to auction 290476462737 and a switch that came with lights fits right where the blanks are.

Areamike,a big thanks for the link. Now the big question, do you believe a switch like the Tacoma switch (Link 3) will actually fit the blank?

Also a big thanks to lucky777. I wonder if Lucky has a 2008+ HL or an older one? It may make a difference.

Hey, why not try a junk yard. If no Highlanders switches then the ones on 4-Runners seem pretty similar. Also, if they don't escort you around, and let you go out to pull the switch you'll get to practice and not ruin you own car! Regretably the last one I went to took me around in a truck with the air conditioning on and no doors. The guy pulled the parts I needed for me. Good luck. Also, junk yards are on-line and they can pull one and mail it to you.

Main thing is the HL has the OEM fog switch on the light stalk. The HL has no provision for a fog light on the bank of switches. I will not be able to find a HL fog switch so indeed the 4-runner may work if they use a switch in that area. In the link above, the seller at e-bay did state it should be what I am looking to buy with the "fits Toyota." The price is right, it is brand new, I will probably pull the trigger on that. Still waiting for him to answer. Thanks for your input and thanks to all that shared their knowledge.

Just got a reply:

Give me a day or 2 to check out a 2010 Highlander. I'm pretty sure it will fit, I just want to make sure.

If you want when I get home this afternoon, I can compare the size of the Tacoma buttons to the HL buttons. After all, they'll be sitting 2 feet apart in the garage. Might save you having to wait a couple of days for his response. (Note to self, don't forget to check it when I get home:lol

If it fits the Tacoma exactly, then it will NOT fit the Highlander.:thumbsdow While the widths are the same, the height of the switches in the Tacoma are 1 9/16 inch while the height in the HL is only 1 1/4 inch! I thought I remembered the new HL having smaller switches and my memory was correct. The switch is too big.

Wow. thanks Moose for checking. I imagine the only way to use that switch is to hack out a bit of the dash with a moto-tool or something.

You know, you should scan through the 2nd Gen Tacoma forum because I think what you need has been posted there before. The switches that fit the Tacoma (Link 3) have only been around a couple of years at most. Prior to that, people were using smaller switches and would cut out space in the "blank" switch covers for them to fit. That's really all you need here. Something small that can me mounted inside one of the blank switch covers (you take the blank out and cut a hole in it for the switch, then pop the blank back in which now has a switch mounted in it).

Maybe I'll do some searching and see if I can find an example.

EDIT:
I tried scanning through the Tacoma section and have two suggestions. The first is to just look for a rocker switch that's smaller than the blank in which you could mount it in the middle of the switch blank. Many are finding them at NAPA auto parts. The second suggestion would be to check and see what Toyota has to offer. Believe it or not, they seem to also carry aftermarket switches that fit. You could easily contact Gary since he's a Toyota Parts Manager and a supporting TN vendor (screen name TOYOPARTSMAN or you can see his profile here: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/member.php?u=219261). He's been very helpful on the Tacoma forums with parts information.

Thanks Moose, I have one more idea to explore today. I talked to a parts guy at Toyota this morning. He suggested I get a real HL switch that was designed for something else. He said the white symbol for what ever it may be will come off by using some nail polish remover. He said I will be left with a switch that fits and no symbol. I like that idea. Not a lot of things I can confuse that for..heehee. I have the light dimer for the dashboard and 3 blanks. I will head down to the dealer today and explore that option.

LOL! That is too funny. I never put 2 and 2 together that you both were from Georgia, but then I would have had no idea anyway since you're in separate cities/towns. But what are the odds since I just happened to be seeing your posts over on the Tacoma forums. Wow, small world indeed!

You can imagine I was surprised to see a guy in Pollack Pines, CA tell me to look up a parts guy at the same dealership I bought my HL!

After speaking with Gary and finding the price for a HL stock switch was tipping the scale over 60 bucks. Gary recommended I talk to a the shop that is dropping in the lights in for me. It is a very reputable place that all the car dealers use for installs on audio and other things like fogs. I used them for my homelink mirror and had been very happy with their work. I am just a bit gun shy with wires so I am having it done. The shop advised they have a switch that will fit on top of the blank. I imagine very similar to the switch on page one of the fog diameter thread. So that is it for now until I go in the first week of Oct.
