I am getting the motor replaced in my 96 Tacoma. I know Toyota puts the VIN all over the truck. Anyone know if it's stamped on the motor someplace?

Also does anyone know how to tell what year the motor is (assuming it has no VIN)?

I asked the dealer these questions and they didn't know.

As of 1996, the *engine serial number* (not the vehicle VIN) was stamped on the side of the engine block (driver side / forward).

Thank you for the info. I found several references on TN to the engine serial number but nobody seems to know how to decode it. Anyone know how?
