I was just out in the garage adding the in-cab air filter and glanced at the side window and noticed my vin print on it. I started to look at all the windows which also have it printed on the bottom. So now I have 6 windows its printed on plus the engine compartment, plus the driver's door posting. Theres probly more than what ive seen. Anyone else ever notice this?

yup all the glass is etched all the panels are marked i don't know about the composite bed but all the fenders, tailgate, doors and bumpers are even marked.
They do it to help "prevent" chopping cars...
It's usually part of the "Toyo Guard" package. Thats one of the listed features along with underguard protection, paint coating...and some other things.

I know that you can actually buy a kit that is like a sticker that you order, and it will etch your printed vin on your windows. I hear it's pretty cheap, i remember watching a discovery channel or history channel thing about stealing cars.
The window VIN etching is either a dealer or owner extra, Toyota does not do this on the assembly line. Toyota does mark every major body component with your VIN on a tamper proof sticker. Plus there is a VIN hidden on the main body of the truck in case someone torches the whole thing, they can still find out who last owned it.

Exactly. If you see your vin on the windows, you mostly likely paid for it as an option. Toyota does not do this at the factory. My dealer tried to add this in when I bought my truck, and I told them to not do it. I didn't want to pay extra for it.

And if they've already done it to the truck you're buying, insist on taking that charge off your transaction sheet. You neither asked for it nor wanted it. The fact that they already provided it is their problem, not yours.

The dealership goes ahead and does this ahead of time because enough people will cave and buy it to more than make up for the ones that stand their ground and refuse to pay for it.

its stupid! my dealer reads the vin on the side windows to make their life easier. oh well, how much was the package again? $200? with a bottle of cleaner wax hahha
$200? I think my delaership was trying to charge like $600.00. Said it included undercoating, paint protecant, scotch guarded seats, blah blah blah. Needless to say, I didn't pay for it, but it is nice to have...especially for free! :)
yeah you definitely paid for that. I ordered my truck before it got to port and that was one of the ridiculously-over-priced port options I deleted. The cops here will etch VIN on your windows for free.

I remember another port option that featured a stainless exhaust tip. It was more expensive than my TRD cat-back. Running those port distributorships must be a great gig...
i got mine and it was from the dealer at no cost

i read all the paperwork i got and one sheet showed it being done with no cost . and it does help with insurance too, they even asked about it when they were getting the info for price
The bastards at the dealer charge you $300 for the window etching crap.
It's actually an acid thats put on over a printed piece of rubber so to speak, i used to do it for nissan and yea the whole process takes all of 8 minutes including dry time. Along with paint protection and rust proofing, i think they're all a waste of money for the time it takes me to do it. You can buy aftermarket stuff and do it for a fraction of the cost yourself. Undercoating is the only thing that is worth while if you ask me.
$300 at the dealer or $30 for the DIY kit online. It was the last charge they tried to stick me with before I got out the door. I said, "Let's make this quick...no thank you."
VIN on the windows is done by the dealership. But, all makes and models print them on alomost all body panels (doors, hood, deckild, fenders, etc) this is a great way to tell if a vehicle has had panels replaced from a wreck.
i don't know of any vin kits for windows, the ones we use have nothing to do with the vin number, they are just a random series of numbers that gets "registered" to the vehicle through the program if the customer wants it.
i don't think what you're seeing on your window is the vin because i know toyota doesn't do that at the factory, and it seems it would be hard to get the vin number decals made and matched up to every vehicle by an outside vendor....
seems like dealership dummies would get the vin number stickers messed up every once in a while and you'd end up with a matrix vin number on your taco..
you sure it's the vin number?
like 6 shooter said it isn't the Vin number placed on the window as far as i know. When i worked for nissan, infiniti it's a computer generated series of numbers then the dealer takes the number down and you send it away to your insurance for them to keep track of. Most insurance places here in canada give you a small rebate if you have the windows etched. The high price your paying is for all the paperwork mombojombo the dealer has to go through but there is kit's you can buy yourself you just have to get them sent online i believe.
I have defiantely seen the exact VIN printed on the window. It's a pian in the ass in my line of work, because if we have to replace a piece of glass we have to get that numper replaced. Lke I said "pain in the ass". I have also seen the random series of numbers, like 6shooter said. I think it depends on the dealer, and what kind of "protection program" they sell.
