I just bought a 2017 tundra from a Toyota dealer. They had originally sold or leased it when new. They said it came with the 38 gal. gas tank which was great. Just went on a long trip and it does not have the larger tank. Came home to check the Toyota vin specs and that shows the larger tank too. Researched and the truck has no history of accidents.
how common is it for the manufacturers specs to be wrong?
That larger tank was a selling point..

On what website did you do a VIN check that specified the fuel tank size? If it is a Toyota site, you could potentially file a lawsuit if they won't replace the tank with a larger one.

But keep in mind that a larger fuel tank is going to result in lower MPG, because your truck will be noticeably heavier if it has the larger tank and you fill it up.
