I have heard of that from other manufacturers.

I don't know about Toyotas current policy is though.

But I would be prepared to take that stuff off if you have to take it in for warrantee issues.

That is half true and half not.

If you install those aftermarket things on your truck you do NOT void your ENTIRE warranty.

There is a a law against that.

For example if you install a aftermarket radio in your Tacoma, and your factory speakers blow out, don't expect your local Toyota dealer to replace those speakers. They will say, since you changed your radio, that was the cause for the speakers to blow.

They won't fix things on your truck that has to do with your modification. If you lift your truck and complain about suspension problems. You won't get it fixed under warranty, you will have to pay out of your pocket. Some dealers are nice and allow you to still get fixed under warranty but it's just pure luck.

Blanket statements like that from dealers are flat out ridiculous! Just adding those things doesn't automatically void your vehicle's warranty on the whole. It is illegal to do so under the Magnuson-Moss act. With that said however the following do apply...

1) Car Alarm - this does effect your warranty on the vehicle's wiring harness and a few things such as the ignition because the alarm is wired into them. The alarm installer will modify your wiring and because of that they can basically void your warranty on those areas because you modified it. If you have wiring issues or ignition system issues it can lead to warranty issues for you getting them covered. While they are required by law to prove that the modifications caused the problems most arbitrators and judges will side with the mfg because things were modified.

2) Intake - I assume you mean a CAI like K&N or Volant. They absolutely can NOT void your warranty because you install one. Again that is illegal. If you have problems such as moisture and/or dirt entering the combustion chamber or oil system, that can be traced to the CAI, then they actually can refuse warranty coverage. Dirty/damaged air flow sensors that need replacing, rich fuel conditions caused by the CAI which can foul plugs, etc... also won't be covered. Any areas you modify to install the CAI also become void under warranty. They can NOT however just void your engine or vehicle warranty because you put a CAI on. If you throw a piston rod, bend a valve, a lifter collapses, or some similar issue they can't void your engine warranty because you have a CAI on. If they tried they would lose in court in a heart beat.

3) - Muffler. This is absolutely the most ridiculous one I hear of. The ONLY warranty that is voided by adding an aftermarket muffler is on the exhaust system itself where you actually modify it. Like the alarm issue with modifying the wiring if you modify the exhaust you cancel out your coverage on anything you modify. So, by adding the aftermarket muffler you lose coverage on the muffler and any pipes you cut into. Your cats and such should be uneffected.

You can't just modify the snot out of your truck and still keep your coverage but by the same token dealers can't void everything because you add a muffler. Lord give me a break.

My dealer installs lifts on brand new trucks. They mark up the Tacomas 5k. I wonder if those Tacomas still have full warranty even though the dealer had it done. My dealer also sells Volant intakes. Weird. I should have no problems. I'll just claim I bought it from there and I should be covered.

Here's a good read. It covers most of the issues dealing with after market items and manufaturers' warranties. http://www.sema.org/main/semaorghome.aspx?ID=50096

It's a good thing groups like SEMA are out there sticking up for us in the courts and on Capital Hill.

As was mentioned, there are laws against companies voiding your entire warranty simply because you bolted on an after market muffler, or whatever. They have to prove the added part was the cause of the problem (or contributed to it) before they have any arguement at all.

When I bought a Corolla back in '92 the dealer told me that if I didn't use Toyota oil filters I would void my engine warranty. I asked them to show me that in writing because if it was true I did not want the car. The story changed. Then I was told that if it was proved that an aftermarket oil filter caused the problem my warranty would be voided. I told them to throw one in the trunk, if the engine blew up I would spin it on before towing the car in.
I don't mind using Toyota filters but didn't appreciate the threat.

My salesman told me the same thing. I demanded at that point to talk to the service manager. I told him that I had a salesman telling me that if I dod not use Toyota filters, i would void my warranty. I told him if that was true, I was going to call Fram and Puralator and tell them that Toyota thinks they have inferior products and are telling me they will not work on their trucks. He quickly said that the salesman was incorrect and the oil filter would have to fail in order for it to not be covered. I informed him that at that point the oil filter manufacturer would have to pay for it anyway.

I hate salesman. Most of them don't what they are selling.

Under the Magnusson-Moss act if a new car mfg requires you to ONLY use their brand of parts, and/or have a dealership do the work, then it must be provided by them to you FREE! Tell them that the next time they pull something like that and tell them you will be glad to use Toyota filters if they put them on free.
