The volume knob doesn't control the volume properly. Turning it one way or another always makes the volume increase; I have to use the steering wheel control to actually control the volume. Seems like a big deal to take apart the front dash to get to it. Any ideas; or is that the only solution?

Yes, you'll need to disassemble some of the dash to get it out.

You can do nothing, or take it out so that you can repair it, have it repaired or replace it.

Based on your other thread, here's your opportunity to go aftermarket and get apple carplay!

It's not much different from old volume control, needs some "cleaner", which you (effectively) can't get into the control from the outside.
You'll be surprised, not all that hard to remove the radio.
