Hello everyone

Just picked up a 2016 Corolla S CVT, (I'm in Canada) I want to get a trailer hitch for a bicycle rack to carry 2 bikes. any recommendations ? Was thinking of going to U-Haul to get one installed, are they good or bad ?

11Th generation Corolla have no towing capacity with the 1.8L engine.

Regardless of transmission install, Corolla is not made to tow.

Toyota does not recommend towing a trailer with your vehicle.
Toyota also does not recommend the installation of a tow hitch
or the use of a tow hitch carrier for a wheelchair, scooter, bicycle,
etc. Your vehicle is not designed for trailer towing or for the
use of tow hitch mounted carriers.

Ther one exceptiion for manual transmission. Your vehicle can be dinghy towed in a forward direction (with 4 wheels on the ground) behind a motor home. Do not tow the vehicle backwards. Doing so may cause serious damage. To avoid serious damage to your vehicle Do not tow your automatic or CVT vehicle with four wheels on the ground.

As for CVT, Toyota limited the amount of oil pressure that keeps the steel belt in the CVT under tension to eliminate as much parasitic drag as possible, so towing may cause the belt to slip!!!

I have call a few Toyota dealer and they all say the same thing. Automatic, manual or CVT 11Th generation Corolla ain't design to pull the smalles scooter trailer or even a carrier for bicycle!!!!!

Cargo capacity have nothing to do with towing capacity. Wend you start pulling and hit the brakes the transmission will be in a lot of stress!!! Here why, ther always slack between hitch ball and traler Coupler. But even if Toyoto also does recommend the installation of a tow hitch
or the use of a tow hitch carrier for a wheelchair, scooter, bicycle,
etc. If ther no trailer and you use a bicycle rack. They should be no slack between hitch ball and traler Coupler and it sould be consider as cargo weight!!!

If you yant to install anyway, ther is a video. The installation is realy easy and you could do it your self. Will take less then 5 mintutes and save you 50$ of installation if it not more.

Can it be done? Yes, I had considered one for the same reason. After measuring the ride height, then seeing how far the hitch came down, couple that with a bike rack that will sag(they all will, EVERY ONE) and the car bouncing as it goes down the road, I nixed that idea quickly.

I went roof rack for mine... If I could do if over again I would go hitch in a heartbeat. Get a nice quality aluminum bike rack. Oneup and Kuat both make a good rack system for bikes. Two nice mountain bikes at about 30 pounds each or a nice road bike at 20 pounds and you only have 100 or less pounds sitting on the back which is half the tongue weight of a class 1 hitch.

I love how the roof rack looks but I hate taking it on and off for washing my car, and now that I have covered parking at my apartment, I can't pull into my spot without taking bikes off the roof first as I almost had an "uh oh" moment the day I moved in. I was about 6 inches from turning my mountain bike into a taco.

A hitch rack is just so much easier. If I wasn't planning on selling my corolla in the next year or so, I would go to a hitch system on my car. The only reason Toyota puts the information in the user manual about not installing a tow hitch is from a lawyer. If they didn't want anyone to install one, they wouldn't have included the weld nuts in the frame for it.
