Weird Noises

1016 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  im_just_jaq
I have a 1997 Toyota Camry and I've had it for about a year. Just recently ( about 2 months) my car started making some weird noises. The first one happens every time I start the car up. Whether it is cold or hot ( I live in FL so it fluctuates allot!) the car makes a noise for about 1 minute like it is guzzling something. It reminds me of a person chugging beer or something. It goes away, I just didn't know if this was anything anyone else has experienced. The other noise is like a hooting noise. It happens sporadically, and whether I have been driving for 1 minute or an hour. its a constant hoot hoot hoot noise, like something is rotating. I really don't know how to describe it perfectly. I'm not too good with cars! If anyone has and suggestions, that would be great!!

Thanks!

It's obvious you have a beer-chugging owl in your engine bay.

Waiting for the burp.

Attempt to narrow down the noise location by using a length of rubber hose as a stethoscope. Listen to the coolant hoses and heater as air may be in the system (the chug). Not sure what the hoot could be without more info. Is this really more of a squeak?
Wow thanks for the reply!
Yes it is kind of squeaky. Like a very faint squeaky hoot. I know it sounds ridiculous, but its really happening
Not enough info but i'll hazard a guess or two. If the chugging noise sounds like liquid, maybe there's air in your cooling system, leave the heater on all the time if you can and see if the noise changes. You can burp it by running it for 20 minutes with the radiator cap off.
Does the hoot noise happen all the time (in which case its gotta be in the engine or less likely, the transmission) or just when moving?. Does it vary with engine speed? The hoot noise sounds like it could be engine belts, clutch related (do you have a clutch), or maybe even a loose flywheel. Not enough info ------

I will try and run it for 20 minutes with the radiator cap off! Thanks for the suggestion. The hoot happens on and off now, and it never varries, always the same speed. The sound is very faint, I can mostly hear it if in im a bank drive threw, or driving when there arent many cars on the road, and even at a stop light. I dont have a clutch, but I was thinking, maybe its something with the brakes because my friend said when I hit the brakes it goes away.

Thanks so much for the help!
