i used to drive a 96 camry, and it was pretty easy to find fitting radios. just go to crutchfield, type in your car; and bam. include a black dash kit, and its all done. but with my newer 2010 camry i just bought, theres a much larger display to consider, with all of the trim around it, including lights and stuff; plus i want something more updated then a regular radio (like touchscreen is what i am looking at). i have found on this sub that theres a dash kit that looks very very similar to stock. i cant remember the link, but heres a pic i just stole from here for example:

so, whenever i find the name for the trim piece again/yall link it, how do i know if the radios i am looking at will fit inside this trim/bracket? what are my options? my 96 camry i upgraded all four speakers, had two amps, and 2 subwoofers that had 600w rms total. so thats kind of what im looking at. i really dont want to spend 4, 5, 6+ on a radio ALONE, but i also dont want shit quality. if getting android functionality or GPS marks up the price by 200-300 dollars, i'd rather buy a 20 dollar windshield/dash mount for my phone to use GPS, for example. i just want it to look close to stock. im already peeved i have a decision to make between getting the illumination from the stock dash lighting but with no stereo stystem, or getting a stereo system but only having HVAC illuminate. lol.

also; is there any DIY videos of completely ripping out the head unit, and replacing it? possibly even going further, and including wiring up subs/speakers/amps? i'd rather not pay car toys 500 just for installation

The trim piece is probably a Metra part.

If you go to the Metra web site (www.metraonline.com) and put in your car details (year, make, model) it will bring up all the pieces they sell. You can buy those parts at Crutchfield or a dozen other places online (Amazon, eBay, etc.).

If your sound system is the factory base install, it's not that hard to add a new unit.

If you have factory NAV, premium sound system (factory amp), etc. it gets more complicated.

Metra usually has all the pieces available to make it plug and play, so you don't have to tear into the factory wiring behind the dash.

And if your primary interested in the head unit's sound quality...you don't have to go with an expensive NAV unit.

For example, Pioneer's DEH (single DIN) and FH (double DIN) head units have very good audio quality for under $200 (retail). Some of those the mid-range models you can pick up at any Wal-Mart or order online. The better models can easily drive an amp, have great bluetooth audio, and many options to let you tweak the sound to your heart's content.

I like going to sonicelectronix.com. I find that their prices are cheaper than Crutchfield's and they usually throw in a free dash kit specific to your vehicle's make and model year. They also sell the wiring harness at a discount to plug in to your aftermarket stereo from the stock stereo wiring. Just type in the year, make, model and what type of audio system you have and the site will show you what type of radios, speakers, etc will fit in your vehicle.

I cosign on the Pioneer HUs. I just recently replaced and upgraded my wife's stock JBL system in her Sequoia w/ the Pioneer AVH-X3800BHS 6.2" touchscreen HU and some aftermarket speakers, amp and backup camera. I'm loving her touchscreen and just a tad bit jealous. Pioneer also has a 7" touchscreen starting w/ the AVH-X4800BS and the AVH-X5800BHS HUs. These two units doesn't have GPS but you can add it own if you choose to. Then you have Pioneer's straight GPS touchscreen HUs.
