What could have happened!?! I LOST REVERSE!!!!

I was driving in a local former gravel quarry last evening and ended up getting buried pretty deep only on my front end. my rear was still gaining traction. I believe I was stuck because of a large rock deep in the mud. So I was trying to pull my front end out and it just would not budge. I then proceeded to try forward once again but came to the conclusion that wasn't going to work. so i locked my rear and put it in 4L popped over to reverse and all it would do is grind. reminding me of when my synchros in my talon were all out of wack. It was giving me the beep to let me know it was close to being in reverse, but all I got was a grind like it was almost there. So in the end I had to have my buddy bring his Nismo frontier out and pull me out. that I will never live down. So I tried to get reverse again and it worked. only once. now I have nothing. any ideas? 6 speed TRD 2007 off road. everything factory. just over 8000 miles.

uh oh, im not sure but sounds like you messed up the transmission :sosad:
sometimes they are difficult to get into gear-the gears don't "mesh" so easily sometimes. happens once and a while, usually rolling a little bit one direction or the other helps. sounds like that's what happened. i wouldn't worry about it if it works fine now. mine does it once in a while and my other tacomas and toyota trucks have too.
your more major concern is the fact that a nissan pulled you out. ouch.

Not really sure what you mean by this.... Beeps at you when you're ALMOST in reverse?

Or do you mean that the LOCKER was beeping ?

If you heard grinding, then I'm willing to bet you were in reverse just fine. If you weren't fully in gear...you wouldn't have any movement to the rear end.

The grinding was most likely the locker not fully engaged - and why it was beeping. It was having trouble matching the gears to lock it in and/or was under torque and couldn't engage fully. The grining was probably the gears that engage/disengage the locker.

Take it out and try to engage & disengage the locker again. It might be just fine....

no i think he means that it was beeping like it does when you put it into reverse, it was going in enough to activate the beep indicator, just not to actually go into gear.
yes thats what I mean... the indicator... I still do not have reverse. It just grinds... I have a appt at the dealership in an hour. trying to get an idea before I go.
Shifter cable or a clip holding the cable could have come loose?
haha I know its terrible that I had to have him pull me out. quite embarrassing. If I had reverse I think I could have made it out. oh well
What happens if you put it into reverse with the motor off then start it?
oh wow, i didn't know you still didn't have reverse.. sucks man. what dealer you taking it to??
Since it is still under warranty, take it to the dealership and have them check it out. Tell them it was not going into reverse and see what they say.
I thought everything was pretty internal as far as cables go.. My undercarriage was very close to the ground, may have been on it. I opened my door and it felt like I was in a lowered honda.
I bought it at Gladstone Toyota... I was also one of the few who had a recall on the rear propeller shaft housing. I may have been doomed from the start. I guess it may come as a blessing because they found me a black 4 door 6 speed TRD off road, which I have heard are very hard to come by.

We are missing the BIG question here. Did you get your girlfriend home before curfew? :smokin:
im going to try and put it in reverse with it off when i leave.. See what happens.

hahaha. Thats pretty funny. actually did make me laugh. I like how well you read into that.

Age and experience my friend ... age and experience.

On a serious note --- I hope all works out with the truck ... they are great machines.
i've never heard of a cable being used on a manual transmission.
so, is that where you're taking it? who are you dealing with there? that's where i work.
if you have any problems just let me know.

Is that a manual transmission thing?

It BEEPS at you when you put it in reverse?

Never ever heard of that.....and never had any vehicles that did that. Just seems weird to me. Call me old school, I dunno....

What exactly is it supposed to do? I mean....if you can halfway be in reverse to trigger the indicator but not actually be in reverse - what benefit is the beeper? That's gotta be somewhat annoying everytime you go in reverse....
