2010 Tacoma 4WD. There is blinking red light (blinks at the rate of about once per second) directly beneath and exactly the same shape as the 4WD engaged indicator light. I can't find any reference to this light in the manual... what does this light indicate?

That is your immobilizer key light. When you stab the key into your ignition, it will immediately go out.
If it pauses, then you are using the valet key. Also known as "chip" keys.

mine blinks red as well when switch is depressed> Is it supposed to change colors when engaged? How do I know if the rear differential is engaged for sure?
Should stay light (not blinking). Blinking lights means there's a problem.

I tried it in 4 lo but was trying it in driveway. I am gonna look at it tomorrow when I can drive it a bit. Didnt know it had to be in 4lo to engage. Since I bought truck used, I didnt recieve manual with it.

I do appreciate all the info.

Go here, bottom of the page, 2nd tab is FOR OWNERS. Click on that, register, input vehicle information, and you can get access to an e-copy of the owners manual. Note sure if you can print key points out for mobile use.

You can also get some maint history there as well.

I 2ND That.

Blinking means its trying to go engage the diff lock but it hasn't. When working and your in 4x4 low it should blink for a sec. then go solid to show its fully locked.

If you in 4x4 low and its still blinking try turning it off and on once or twice or slowly moving the truck while it trying to lock to get everything lined up.
