i dont know much about corollas im into the 3S community but a buddy of mine just blew his engine in a 97 1.6 m/t and was wondering what other years would work.

pretty much any A engine will drop into the car and use the same mounts, the differences will be with the PCM/wiring.

since his is OBD2 try to stick with a 96+ engine since its likely he has EGR and some other emissions bits as well as a slightly different distributor. unless ALL you're swapping is the short block, or shortblock and head.
