It looks like demand has been strong for the 2012 Camry hybrid, so strong that Toyota is raising the price in the middle of the model year. In that context, I'm wondering how willing dealers are to deal on these cars, and I'd like to hear from folks who've bought them recently.

My XLE

On 03/26/12 I took delivery of a 2012 Camry XLE with MSRP of $34011 with an OTD price of #31000. That was before TTL. So in that case the Dealer was willing to sell for less.

I had dealt with this same Dealer and Sales Manager in 2009 for a 2010 Prius IV. I had also dealt with another dealer that would only come off of 500 an a $35000 XLE.

The XLE is better sized and more comfortable than the Prius. So I am satisfied.

What options do you have on your XLE?

My Options

You asked for the options and they are as follows:

CQ - Convenience Package
FE - 50 State Emissions
SR - Power Tilt/Slide Moonroof
RS - Rear Lip Spoiler
Anti Theft System with Alarm
CN - Cargo Net
CF - Premium Carpet Mat Set
3M - 3M Paint Protection Film
P2 - Vehicle Shield Package
LA - Leather Package w/Heated Seats
3M Tinted Windows
EX - Nav system with Ntunes. I went with the 6.1 touch screen, rather than the HDD and the 7 inch touch screen. Had all of that on my Prius IV and went with the cheaper one.

The only thing that I would have liked to have and it does not is the Blind Spot Monitor.

$31,000 is a great OTD price for an XLE with all those options. That's pretty much all the stuff I want, minus spoiler, cargo net, paint protection and tinted windows. (I bought the paint protection option with my RAV4 and later read somewhere that it's not much more than a really heavy coat of wax.) I don't know if I could match your OTD price here in California, where the state sales-tax rate is 7.25% and a local add-on for Santa Cruz County brings it to 8%.

I set up a spreadsheet to calculate the best possible price, based on Consumer Reports invoice/dealer hold-back information. I come up with $31,026.80 for the car (includes a $900 profit for the dealer), plus $760 destination charge, plus a $17 environmental protection fee, plus $2,458 sales tax and $295 registration fee, for an OTD total of $33,190.

I agree that a couple of the things I didn't want but was already in the package. The TTL here is about 3.5% so it will be around 11 or 1200.

The 3M protection is film and I didn't mind it being there since I added it to my Prius IV and it did help, but the Camry sits a little higher in the front than the Prius and hopefully wont get as many dings from pebbles.

Good luck in your hunt and hope you find what you are looking for.

Jim, thanks. I have an old friend in Oklahoma City. His name is John Kennedy. At one point he was Oklahoma's secretary of state. Maybe you know him or of him? It's a smaller world than we might think and I keep running into this six-degrees of separation thing.

where are all the hybrids?

Does anyone get the sense that all hybrids are in tight supply right now? When I visit dealerships I'm lucky to see one in the lot, not one of each kind of hybrid. Still no LE Camry Hybrid in Canada (?) and a dealer I visited said that they will only get 6 Prius "c"s for the whole year. I've given up waiting for the plug in Prius for this year. If I even can get the hybrid I want, I'm not expecting to be in a great position to bargain.

MSRP on Monroney was a little over 33, paid 31k literally out the door, after taxes/tags/fees - did not have a trade in and dealer traded with another to get this car for us..

Essentially if the dealer wants to make a sale, they'll come down on the MSRP..

XLE

CF - Carpet/Trunk Mat Set
CQ - Convenience Package
DK - Preferred Owner's Portfolio
EF - Rear Bumper Applique
EX - Display Audio with Navigation and Entune
G4 - Illuminated Door Sill Enhancements
LA - Leather Package
SR - Power Tilt/Slide Moonroof
WL - Wheel Locks

Only things would have liked to add were spoiler and Blind Spot monitor..

Tax rate was 7%
I "Googled" for it after I asked you. Shoulda done that first. Anyhow, given that the difference in sales-tax rates between N.J. and Calif. is only 1%, you definitely got a great out-the-door deal. The best OTD price I can come up with at your tax rate, figuring $500 over invoice plus $760 destination charge, is about $33,000. How the heck did you do it?

Where were you getting your invoice figure? Dealership got it directly from Toyota's network (they put in the VIN, it listed invoice for the car..) additionally, each option package has a different markup - Invoice + 500 + destination was a little over 29, reused plates, so registration was cheap, taxes were right around 2k - I guess out the door was a little over 31k, but under 31,500

I got the invoice figures from Consumer Reports. I subscribe to their online car pricing service. The invoice for a "base" TCH XLE is currently $26,427 (Toyota has raised their prices since the first of the year). I added the invoice costs of options to that and came up with a total invoice cost of $29,828. That includes the convenience package, leather package, moonroof and EX display audio option. I added the $760 destination charge to that number, for a total of $30,588. I ceded the $548 dealer factory "holdback" (rebate) to the dealer, which gives him his profit. The cheap registration must have helped you. (How did you get "reused plates" on a new car?) But your deal still sounds like a steal. I hope I can find a dealer like that around here!

Gotcha.. Yeah, I believe the base XLE Invoice was 25,8 something? I don't have the exact figures with me

Just picked up my XLE

Quite simply, my 2 hour old XLE w:

Silver/gray interior.

EX nav, SR sunroof, CQ convenience pkg, mats, wheel locks, plus 760 dest. MSRP $31,112; sold for $29,000 (invoice including dest) + 500 for 2 dealer added heated seats, seat base and back, plus TTL.

BTW heated seats are multi-stage w/switches in factory location. Couldn't be happier, didn't want leather and extra power passenger seat, this was a reasonable alternative.

Came w/Michelin Primacy's (not Bridgestones) to boot.

Oh, I had the dealer remove the 3 hybrid badges, Except for the blue wart on the nose and trunk, it looks like a ICE XLE. Already fooled another salesman who thought they had another XLE to sell. Planet/Schmanet, I just want to use less of that over-priced gas...

My $.02.

Good for you! I am encouraged by everything I've been reading in this forum (on top of my direct experience with the '12 TCH when I rented one for a weekend a few weeks back). I'll be looking to buy one around the end of June. I have the cash now, but we'll be too busy with travel and other stuff between now and then, plus I'm hoping for more supply and less ardent demand by that time.

When I made the deal for my father we walked OTD $29950 It was because we were promised that the car we were looking for would be coming off the truck that day and we arrived at the dealer to find a different Hybrid camry with more options and more money. The price tag was $35,788 we also had a problem waiting for the car and because of the trouble we went through I asked we get the protective film which they threw in for free.

Wow.

Quite a deal, they'll make up for it for sure.

I know there's holdbacks etc that the dealer will make off of me, I don't deny them a profit. I'm happy at invoice.

My last purchase was a '11 Outback bought under the VIP program, a friend of mine is a controller at Subaru HQ. I got 2% under invoice, plus over $900 in incentive/holdback money taken off also. Nice thing was no negotiations needed, just a prearranged visit to dealer of choice.

So I'm ok with it all.

Love the new car smell!

Prices are still quite high here in Colorado because the hybrid Camry's are flying off the lots. We paid $28,885 plus TTL for a $31,000 vehicle w/nav. Not great but we are happy since the dealer gave us $1200 less than we paid for our 2008 Honda Accord we traded in. Great deal on the trade.
