i was wondering i always hear bout the toyota truck lasting for 100s of thousands of miles.. is there only certain years of this truck mines a 91 and its got 235k miles on it and its smooth.even tho right now im having a spark problem..are the newers ones like the tacomas goin be life long as these older ones.. and anyone know what the longest or most mileage ever been on a toyota truck wihtout a rebuild?

Apperently there was an old post on this site (http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/f22) where a guy in Tampa,Florida had a Tacoma into the dealerhip for replacing the water pump and it supposedly had over 1 million miles.

last year there was a new guy who posted that he got 500 000 miles on it and there are many people out there who have lots of miles on their Toyota trucks,SUVs and cars but are too busy driving to find these discussion sites and brag about their mileage.Don't forgot there are Hondas that have high mileage there is a local courier company near me that has a 1990 Honda Accord I believe that has over 1.5 million KMs and another one with over 750 000 KMs.
There is a Diesel Mercedes in Greece that has over 2.8 million Kms:

I don't understand why the 85 Landcruiser from Australia and the diesel Mercedes from Greece are not in the Guiness Book Of World Records as they list is a 1960s Volvo with not as many miles.

mines got 235k miles on it but engine runs strong still..right now having a spark problem but in shop.. prob the distributor.. i do have few leaks and stuff any suggestions on things i should check or do to make this engine last longer...and things that usually go out around certain mileage on these toys..and curious what average price to rebuild one of these engines are.. mines v6 3.0 im hoping to get at least 300k out if ill be happy..

Has yours had the head gasket safety recall done?

You can call a Yota dealership and give them the VIN and they should be able to tell you. I am saving mine for the next timing belt replacement. It will save you all the labor cost ($500+)because they have to remove the timing belt to do the head gaskets...

if/when you have it done get the idler bearing done also... it was a weak point in a 92 4runner I had w/ that same V6...

Just the 3.0 liter V6 from 90-95...

Good thing about the 4cyl (22re) is that it has and actual chain not a belt...

The weak points when you do the chain in a 4 banger are the timing chain guides. The cheap kits have plastic guides...they usually suck... get coated metal guides (I believe they are teflon coated)... other than that drive the crap out of it, keep the oil changed and don't let it get hot... the 22RE's are cast iron block and aluminum head... so they expand and contract under the heat at slightly diff rates... LCEngineering.com sells a Metal hybrid head gasket... they are about 90 bucks but well worth it!!!

i just looked up a thing and said there is a call for my year on the headgaskets that was issued in 97 do i have to be the original owner and is there a deadline on a recall for the free service if it is free on the recalls.. thanks for that info..

you do not have to be the original owner (especially since it was a safety recall)... I was not the original owner and the recall card is addressed to me... no deadline that I know of and it does not mention it on the card...

If the headgasket is defective Toyota will replace it free of charge under their "silent recall" and they will give you a free rental car,if your local dealership refuses to honour the recall call another dealership and give them the VIN if that fails call the Toyota Regional Office for your area of the USA and they will give your local dealership 48 hours to comply.As fas as I know for the older models (88-95) you don't have to be the original owner.

Packfan the R series of Toyota engines like the 18R,20R and 22R are all timing chain driven and are all interference engines which means that if the timing chain jumps a tooth or several teeth or breaks one,several or all eight valves will hit the top of the pistons and bend leading to timely and costly repairs.That's the down side to the R series of Toyota engines along with expensive repairs as the timing belt in other engine designs is easy to replace and only about $200 at most shops.

I have a '92 pickup 22RE I bought new, has ~75,000 on it, so I guess it's still good for a couple of more years.

I bought my teenage son an '84 Corolla with 316,000 on it (paid less than 1 car note for it), and it doesn't smoke or have a single leak, no rust, and it runs like a top.

I have a 92 V6 4X4 that I bought new. It has had head gaskets at, 90000, at 125000, a messed up valve job at(done at dealer) 150000 and another valve job or I should say replacement at 200000, along with one cam. The truck now has 223000, and she runs like new. waterpump at 90000, exhaust and starter around 140000. Just had new Bridgestone AT Revo's put on it wow!!!

Back to the question of this thread... My buddy has an '88 V6 4runner with 230000 and the motor has never been apart. I thought the head gasket campaign was for all the early V6's but I may be mistaken

niebor down the street has a '98 F150 4X4 with over 300000. Motor has never been apart. Engine has been on Mobil 1 since new

anyway i asked person bout the safety recall on the headgaskets and he told me they only warranty those to like so many miles and so many years after the recall came out.. mines 235k miles on it and its not needin new gasket but for free i would get new ones for such high mileage u know...but maybe that guy dont know..i cant see toyota doing that for such a high mileage vehicile

My 3VZ got over 280,000 miles before it went. It was my fault for the engine going out. :hammer: The radiator was falling apart and sprung some minor leaks. I just kept driving and refilling the lost coolant everyday since the vehicle wasn't showing any signs of any problems. One day I noticed white smoke from the exhaust and then find a milky mixture in my oil. Bye bye engine.

Oh well, this is my first vehicle and I have learned from my mistake.
