What year and models can I cannabalize parts from for my 87 4X4??

Hi all,

I just got my bone-stock 87 4X4 Pickup running smooth. After a new feul pump, some fine tuning and a set of new tires, the old beast is running like a champ.

Unfortunately this truck was originally sold with zero extras, its got no tach, no AC, no agjustabler steering column etc...to top it off the previous owner bolted an aluminum plate over the holes that were left when someone stole the radio...so no radio or goodie box either.

So im going to be scouring the junkyards looking for extras to install...anyone know the range of years I can borrow from? I know this model had changes made in 88, and that from 85 to 87 its was pretty much the same...what about later models? Any ideas?

Also im wondering how difficult a dash board swap would be? Anyone do this lately?

Thanks a bunch!!!

Welcome to the board, fellow Santa Cruzer. I got an 87 4x4 as well. I don't know what years exactly will fit your truck. You can go down to Gino's and look at his dashes or go to the yard on 17th. Maybe even go to Moss Landing or SJ and check out pick n pull, but they seem to have only older models than 87. Beware that sometimes even with the same looking dash, the instrumentation is different and requires different sensors in the engine. Like oil pressure gauges especially. If you wanna meet sometime, I can introduce you to a few local yota truck enthusiasts. I think we have an extra A/C system here on a friends truck that he is not going to use if you're interested, it's off an 84. You'll need to find the controls at a wrecker, but you could get the compressor, condensor coil and maybe the evaporator from him. We are rebuilding his engine right now.
Also you can check out www.4x4wire.com and www.yotatech.com for more info on trucks.
PM me if you wanna hook up.
Hey thanks for the welcome Alltrac...

Ill check out gino's for some interior trim...which yard is on 17th?

I wouldnt say ive reached the "enthusiast" stage yet but im getting there...heh...

I love the truck though and am really enjoying it...Id like to maybe find an old rollbar for the truck bed, I have a lumber rack on there now and I just dont like it...im not a lumber rack kind of guy, ya know?

im not gonna say im 100%, but i would say the 86-88, possibly 85-88? i know that 89+ will work from i think 89-96. but i think the rule of thumb is by generations, 1st gen, 2nd generation, 3rd and so on.
Logically I would assume inter-generational swapability as well...so what gen is 87? I think I read somewhere that from 85 to 87 no real changes were made...any confirmations on this?

Anthony's is on 17th, right across from the high school, next door to the fire station.
I happen to have an old rollbar here I took off of my truck with a matching set of nerf bars(those are the bars that go under the cab like a step to get in). They are triple bars with double braces and weigh about as much as a small whale. I think I picked up about 2 seconds in the 1/4 by taking them off, but you're welcome to come by and check them out if you want. I was gonna sell them at the flea market for 50 bux. Heck, I might be interested in your lumber rack. Maybe we can just swap or something.
Sweet! Sounds like a good swap to me, I got the rack with the truck but it didnt fit. So I had some new rails welded on to fit my truck...so a test fit might be in order. Its in rough condition btw....I was going to have it sand blasted and powdercoated in a few months or at least primered to stop its surface rust...dunno if yer still interested. I paid 80 bucks to have it welded, let me know if your into it...

Peace!
Bring it by next week. I'm on River Street. PM me for details.
