I think only the 02 and up have a chain. Everything else before that had a belt

Well, its only the '02+ with the 4cylinder 2AZ engines that had the chain... the 1MZ and 3MZ V6's still have belts.

When I asked the guy at the dealership, when i went to go get my car serviced, showed me a booklet which stated 00 and up had timing chains.. maybe we both misread it?

00 still ahd the 5SFE engine so it should have a belt. Like whitechocaltoe said the V-6's all have belts. the 4 cylinders are the ones with chains. Starting in 02 for the Gen5

If you go to the Toyota website (toyota.com) and look around, you can find a listing of all Toyota models for the past 15 years or so, that tells whether each model has a timing belt or chain.
