What's that noise (and smell!)??

So yesterday I loaded up the bikes so I could take the lady up to the mountains for some backcountry riding. My driveway is pretty steep to get out of, and to get the bikes in, I have to drive down nose first. Then load the bikes, and back out. Combined, the bikes probably make up about 700lbs. Add me and my g/f, and now the total load is close to 1000lbs. So yesterday, as I'm backing out of the driveway at a VERY slow pace (it's a very narrow driveway) I start hearing a very disconcerting sound. Best described as a cell phone on vibrate buzzing in the bed. It would only happen as I accelerated, not just sitting there with the hill assist holding me still (not sure if it's actually hill assist, but you get what I'm saying). So I'm thinking to myself, that's a strange sound. I get to the top of the driveway, and stop. My window is down, and all of a sudden I smell something I've never smelled before. It wasn't clutch, it wasn't brakes, it wasn't cat pee. I can't think of anything that could have caused this. I've done this same maneuver hundreds of times before with out any problems, although this was most likely the most weight I've tried backing out with. My first thought was maybe the tranny or transfer case is going. Is that possible? Would that do the described issues?

Also, when the truck was empty, I backed out of the driveway again, and had no problem.

was the smell like rotten eggs? if so that's your cats. but as for the buzzing noise, i have no clue, thats weird

Add me and my g/f, we're close to 1000lbs all together.
yikes...just playin, the way its worded is funny, but i get what you are saying

^^I was thinking the exact same thing!!!!:lol::thumbsup:

If it is a rotten egg smell that is definitely the cats, the buzz could have been something on the bikes or a part of the bikes possibly touching the side of the bed. I would repeat the manuever again without the bikes before I would worry too much out the buzz.
What? my g/f and I are each 500lb. Is that a problem?

KIDDING! Sorry about the wording. No, the smell was not like rotten eggs. It's very hard to explain since I haven't smelled it before. If I had to put a likeness to it, I would say like a burning chemical. I suspect the sound and the smell are related, but since I can't figure out what either of them are, I can't be sure.
Is there a black stripe on your driveway? If so, it was your tire spinning and the smell was burning rubber!

J/K, I'm sure you know what that smells like...I have no idea what it could have been.
I am not sure about the smell, but the buzzing I would just think its how the bikes were tied down that time. They could have just been moving around. If you are worried about your tranny or anything like that, did you check the fluid just to be on the safe side? Also, did you have it in 4lo or hi?
Diff fluid, that shit stinks, also you could be grinding gears from the stress, spinning tires, or burnt tranny fluid.

I suspected burning tranny fluid, but does that happen? I've never had a car or bike do that. Would creeping really slowly out of a steep driveway with a lot of weight cause that?
Reving the RPM's to high would cause the burning, only takes a quick high vroom. I take you have a manual? But you also said you had a vib, my real guess is that you stressed your rear diff, backing uphill with 1000 pound. Park on a flat surface, and pop off the rear diff fill plug and check the fluid. If you do your own maintenance, depending on what rear dif you have, open diff, or offread= open, or sport = lsd, you can change the fluid if it's real funky, and check the magnetic drain plug for fresh metal shavings, and get some quality diff oil in there. I used royal purple, and when i changed mine out the second time it was still fresh looking and clean (30k factory interval change).

I have an auto. I also had the 30k change done about 5k ago. I hope they put fluid back in. Also, I didn't do any high revs getting out. It was a VERY low rpm, VERY slow ascent up the driveway.
