My 98 Taco 4x4 uses the double one piece large roller bearing. Upon installation does that bearing need to have the sheilds popped off and packed with gease? Any help would be great! Thanks!

if with shields you mean the rubber discs/seals between the inner and outer races, then no, that is a sealed bearing, and if my memory is right of 4X4's they have this set-up. The 2WD has a non-sealed bearing that needs to be packed (fronts).

Maybe someone else can help more, might mention whether you mean front or rear in case it makes a difference.

Should be pre-greased...it is "sealed", but make sure when you put the hub back together that the large washer/nut touches the outer edge of the bearing. Otherwise the bearing will come apart and that's not good...I used a aftermarket bearing from Oreily's that turned out to be 1/8" or so narrower that factory, the shop didn't realize when the installed it and my wheel almost came completely off...second round they had to put a steel shim in to keep the bearing in check. Hope that made sense. Also hope the shop wasn't full of Sh!!. To double check, measure the factory bearing w/ micrometer vs. aftermarket; if you use aftermarket.
